From Booklist

Tangentially addressing the plight of children forced to race camels in the Persian Gulf, this title, by an author who has spent time living in Dubai, is for slightly younger readers than Kim Antieau's similarly themed Broken Moon (2007). When war erupts in the fictional city of Abudai, Adam, a carefree Australian living there, stupidly leaves his convoy and winds up stranded in the desert. There, he meets former camel rider Wadil, left for dead by his ruthless trainers. Emphasizing Adam's point of view but interjecting comments from Wadil, the narrative shows how the adolescents, neither of whom speaks the other's language, move past dismissive labels (crazy Infidel, half-wit who can't speak English) as they struggle to survive. Weakening the message about cross-cultural understanding is the convoluted grammar of Wadil's perceptions; wouldn't he think and speak fluently in his own language? Despite this misstep, the cliff-hanging chapters will hook readers, particularly fans of Will Hobbs; and the timely backdrop of politics and society in the Middle East is a welcome aspect of this first novel. From the Author

Because I'd always wanted to be a writer, I decided that when I left school I needed to go out into the world and collect experiences, so that when I had enough I could write about them. I traveled around Australia and then around the world. The experiences I collected were many and varied; such as learning how to cook when I worked with shearers in the outback; learning how to fly when my husband and I ferried airplanes across to Canada and back; learning to teach when I taught English as a foreign language to Arab girls. Along the way I learnt about life. I got my chance to write while living in Dubai when I started working for a children's magazine. All my different experiences became useful. I had six columns to write―covering astronomy, astrology, science and technology, and gardening, as well as a weekly bedtime story and an advice column. There I also met an interesting old lady from Iran and helped her write her autobiography, which was later published. My time in Dubai taught me more than how to write, though. I learnt that when people from different cultures meet, they often don't trust or respect each other, and there can be many misunderstandings that can lead to war. But after having lived and made friends with people from other nationalities, I know that no culture is better than another; we just do things differently. I wrote the first draft of Camel Riderwhile living in Dubai. We left there in March 2001 and now we live in magical "Rowan House," which overlooks the Sunshine Coast of Queensland and where I run a writers' retreat and guesthouse. --Prue Mason

This book is about the amazing creative, scary, sad and hilarious adventures of two brave different culture boys. Recommended for everyone 6 and up.rating one million stars!

The timing is right for books like The Camel Rider to appear for children. With the hot success of books such as the Kite Runner, there is a market for books written about the Muslim culture. This multicultural book allows readers to learn about the culture in the midst of an interesting adventure story. Aussie Adam lives with his family in the Middle East on a compound in the fictional city of Abudai (sounds a lot like Dubai to me). Adam is bored of his life and longs to get away from the thumb of his overprotective parents. His only joys are his beloved dog, Tara, and the hours he gets to surf with his buddies. Walid is a young boy from the Middle East who is a camel rider, a small child trained to ride camels in races that men gamble on. His mother felt pressured to give him up so he could have a better life and a possible education, but he spends his days abused and beaten by his guardians. The lives of these two boys intersect when bombs are dropped near the compound. Adam's parents are both away and so a family friend grabs him for an evacuation and chooses to leave the dog behind. Now Adam has to escape the car and go back to save Tara, his faithful dog. When Walid accidentally lets a camel escape, his guardians decide to drop him off in the desert tied up and left with no resources as punishment. Adam finds Walid tied up near the mouth of a cave and thinks he can show him the way home. Adam and Walid speak different languages and don't trust each other, due to negative stereotypes each of them have been taught. But in order to survive and get home, they are forced to work together.Since they can't understand each other's language, they try to use gestures, which cause different levels of success actually getting the message across. For instance, when Adam becomes very hungry, he decides they should eat Tara's dog food. Walid is horrified for he has heard white people eat dogs. When Adam shows him the can, Walid thinks Adam is suggesting they eat a dog for food. We get to hear the thoughts of both boys and see why they are reacting the way they do. A different font is used for Adam and Walid to differentiate their thoughts. I really enjoyed the book. There was suspense, action, humor, and friendship.I don't think the characters were developed as fully as they could be. I also think the plot was a little too predictable. But the story was still compelling. It shows that when language barriers exist, it is so easy to misinterpret what others are saying. Maybe it will encourage readers to take a second look before they jump to conclusions about people from other cultures. Both boys realize they have something to learn from each other. I would recommend this book to children in grades 4-6. The only part of the book that might cause some objections is that for some reason, Adam swears a few times. The cover art gives an air of mystery and will attract readers.Free copy donated by Charlesbridge Press

This is an excellent book for middle grade readers. The author has painted a brilliant picture of the Arabian Gulf area. One can feel the unforgiving heat of the desert, the desperation of two boys lost and the frustration of not being able to communicate with each other. Ms. Mason has captured the thoughts and emotions of both boys perfectly and kids will relate. There is just enough action to hold the attention of that age group and the resourcefulness and ultimate friendship will be remembered long after the book has ended. I was happy to hear there is a second book with the same characters, because I wanted to read more and I know the kids will too.

From Booklist

The second arc of Lemire’s series continues to wear its influences (The Road, The Stand, Mad Max, Y: The Last Man) proudly on its flanneled sleeve, though Lemire’s skillful storytelling ensures that nothing feels derivative. While boy-deer Gus gets poked, prodded, and hypnotized by people looking to understand the global pandemic that tore society to shreds and caused children to be born as human-animal hybrids, we learn a bit about what drove the brutish Jeppard to deliver the boy to captivity. In Lemire’s burly, chiseled artwork, a tiny tweak in Jeppard’s steely glare speaks volumes, and the sweetness behind Gus’ dazed expressions gets sharper by the page. --Ian Chipman

I was slightly unimpressed with the first volume of this comic, Lemire has a gift for strong character interaction--particularly with complicated family dynamics--and while the premise was wildly original, the beginning of "the road meets Bambi" was too literally implemented. The secondary character motivations were mostly unprovoked malice and seems to small of the kinds of character simplifications that ruin post-apocalyptic films and television (AMC's Walking Dead being a prime offender). This actually started to deliver more on the premise by removing the malice from many of the main actors and taking time with the backstory, even if there are still some cartoonish villains in the brew.Lemire's art still works here and the expressionistic art is maintained. Some of the panel designs are particularly innovative and some of the mystery is more firmly established. It takes it's time with movement, which is nice as comics often rush development in a way that cheapens the characters. That said, I still feel that this isn't quite living up to it's critical acclaim level yet. It's good. It's very good. Lemire is talented artist and writer, and both in one person is rare, and Vertigo is doing a good job of letting these characters breathe, which was rare in comics. Some of Lemire's superhero work seems to suffer from being forced to accelerate things. Those caveats aside, this volume, more than the first, let me truly see it's promise

I love that right off its treated like a series or show where they do a "previously on" and recap the previous volume. I think the pace was pretty steady and we're learning a lot about the characters and what's happening in this new world. We pick up with Gus and Jepperd on their journey to "The Preserve." Jepperd promised to take Gus to this safe haven. It's supposed to be a sanctuary for Gus and other hybrids, but it isn't what it seems. Nothing is. What Gus learns is you can't always trust the ones you love... Heart ache, guilt, and determination are rolled into this packed volume.I totally feel for poor Gus and Jepperd with their losses and trying to cope. It's got to be hard. Jepperd struggling with internal issues which is reveal to be about his late wife, Louise, and Gus becomes and experiment at "The Preserve".And that ending! Before starting I did NOT see that coming, but started to pick up on some hints and was like noooooo way! I'm really interested to see where this goes and how it all connects.

If you enjoyed the first book in this series, this second volume continues the unique and awesome story while moving it forward at a solid pace. Really not sure how much more needs to be explained beyond that, as Jeff Lemire keeps up the quality of work here.

Enjoying this story. Can't wait to see what is going to happen next. Will Jeppard be able to save Gus?

Lemire is genius. He keeps every moment of this series pushing to the limit! You can't stop reading.

A great comic that keeps your attention from start to finish. I would suggest to start on volume 1 so you're not missing anything important. I read a lot of comics and this has to be one of my favorites.

It is hard not to love Gus.

I'm really enjoying this series & can't wait to get the rest of the books to find out what happens.

Kitchen Privileges: A Memoir, by Mary Higgins Clark

From Publishers Weekly

Clark, author of 27 bestselling novels, has shifted gears and written a memoir that speaks directly to readers. The touching collection of anecdotes begins with a Depression-era childhood in the Bronx lacking in money but rich with love. The author's mother, who told everyone, "Mary is very gifted... [she's] going to be a successful writer," supplemented her income by renting out rooms with "kitchen privileges," and raised her children with selfless heroism, proving a shining example when Clark became a young widow, left to bring up five children on her own. The book proves particularly engaging when Clark tells of her writing group and the professor, William Byron Mowery, who taught her to think "what if" and "suppose" as a way of devising interesting plots. She conveys her courtship with her first husband sensitively and humorously, and writes of his death in honest, understated prose. Clark charts her literary road frankly, pointing out the numerous rejection slips and the failure of her first book, Aspire to the Heavens-the love story of George and Martha Washington-due to a misleading, uncommercial title. It's typical of her optimism that she considered it a triumph ("I knew... I had what it took to actually write a book"). Ranging from stories of illness and struggle to her happy 1996 marriage to Merrill Lynch CEO John Conheeney, this memoir shows what can be done when someone pursues her dreams, remains action-oriented and fights to overcome enormous obstacles. Popular thriller writer Clark once struggled like many other writers to get her work noticed and published, and in her memoir, she shares both her story of this and other trials. Growing up during the Depression in New York, Mary was doted on by her loving parents and was often found playing with her two brothers, Joseph and John. Her father's death at 54 was the first tragedy of young Mary's life. Her mother was forced to take in lodgers to make ends meet, and a variety of eccentrics traipsed through the Higgins household. Mary opted for secretarial school over college, knowing that money was a constant concern for her family. After a few years as a secretary, Mary daringly decided to apply to be a flight attendant, and she spent a year flying around the world. She returned to marry Warren Clark, a dashing family friend who had captured her heart long ago. Together the pair had five children, and while caring for them, Mary diligently worked on her writing. She sent out story after story, facing the rejection that deters so many writers. Mary persevered, eventually getting a story accepted. But Warren's health was failing, and he died of a heart attack in 1964. Following his death, Mary took a job writing for a radio program, and eventually began working on the novels that brought her so much success. Clark's many fans will find her life just as interesting as her many novels. Kristine HuntleyCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I felt like I knew Mary Higgins Clark after reading her memoir, "Kitchen Privileges." Written with great warmth and humor, Mary shares her story, very much an American success story. While I expected to marvel at her phenomenal professional success as a writer, I was equally impressed by her incredible spirit and work ethic. A young widow, Mary returned to work full-time writing radio shows and wrote her fiction for two hours each morning before she woke her five children for school. Inspired by an acrtress friend, Mary even finds the time and energy to attend Fordham University to obtain a degree! Mary's talent for telling good stories brought her worldwide recognition and great success, but it is her spirit and down-to-earth confidence that caused me to admire her even more.

Reading this book was a spiritual experience. I love all of her books and am grateful that she is still writing. This story of her life, how she faced her challenges, and still raised an exceptional family is inspirational. She stayed true to her values which was not always easy but always essential. She is one of my heroes. Thank you!

I must admit that I have never read a Mary Higgins Clark book before. But I purchased this book for a friend who is an avid reader of Mary Higgins Clark. I read the description on Amazon, and I later also purchased it for myself. What a wonderful person Ms. Clark is and an exciting life she has led. She has overcome many obstacles and tragedies in her life and has a positive, can do it attitude! I think you will enjoy her book.

Like everyone who visits bookstores I've seen Mary Higgins Clark's books. I never had the slightest inclination to pick one up until now. As a writer I'm always interested in how successful authors do it and when I saw this autobiography in the store I tried to purchase it. Alas, the store clerk refused to sell it to me. It was being held until November the 19th. This is the first time a bookstore has ever refused to sell me a book and I went home with my curiostiy piqued. When the 19th arrived I headed back and snatched up a copy.As it turns out, Clark is an interesting woman, whose New York childhood and tender first marriage made her the writer she is today. After reading Kitchen Privileges I'm ready to check out her other works, starting with her first book on George & Martha Washington.

I'm just half way through, but this is a wonderful autobiography of MHC. She is such a good writer that the pages (and delicious highlights from her life!) just fly by!

If you like reading Mary Higgins Clark you will Love Kitchen Privileges: A Memoir. It is like you are sitting in her kitchen having a cup of tea and she is just talking directly to you.I am so very glad that she followed her dreams!I love her books!

I have all of Mary Higgins Clark's books. She introduced me to psychological suspense stories and now I work in the psychology field. Reading her book of her life and how she entered the writing world has endeared her even more to me. I hope she writes many more books.

I loved this book about my favorite author. Very well written and interesting.

This book focuses on managing return and risk in modern financial institutions. The central theme is that the risks faced by managers and the methods and markets through which these risks are managed are becoming increasingly similar, whether an institution is chartered as a commercial bank, a savings bank, an investment bank, or an insurance company. Although the traditional nature of each sector's product activity is analysed, a greater emphasis is placed on new areas of activities such as asset security, off-balance-sheet banking and international banking.

This book is a very thorough description of all financial institutions, while most textbooks like it will only focus on depository institutions. It is also very thorough at describing risk metrics. The first half of the book discusses the intricate dynamics of financial institutions and the second half deals with all the risk metrics that affect them. The largest drawback of this book is the disconnect between the text and the questions. While many of the questions do have sufficient content in the book to answer or solve the problems, there were many questions that were not possible to answer without additional sources because there was no mention or reference to it in the text. I recommend the book in its content, but not in its problem sets. There is simply too much disconnect between the two.

This is probably the best book in risk management available today. This is due to the combination of breadth and depth of the text. The author gently introduces the student to an important subject and explains with pains how to manage each and every kind of risk. The two chapters on Interest rate risk are absolutely fabulous. There is a sense of continuity because the concepts you learn in one chapter has applications in another. The problems at the end of the chapters are are also challenging and will require an in-depth understanding of the subject. This book is the ultimate.

Great product!!!

It was good book, and the seller also good, but the problem they couldn't send any book out of the state. Overall is good.

I got a book about entrance exams for catholic high schools! A completely non-related and absolutely irrelevant book. Way off!

it didn't complete its duty, it wasted the time of buyer, it didn't concern about the time cost of custom

The text covers everything you would expect from a book about risk management: credit risk, IR risk, derivatives, securitization, etc. In my opinion the authors have done a nice job of explaining various models/concepts/ideas in a clear and concise fashion. It's also noteworthy to mention that if you are using this book you're probably using it in a class. Heads up - the chapter problem solution keys provided by your professor from the publisher (the MSWord files the publisher distributes) contain a surprisingly large number of trivial errors here -- ie. incorrect algebra and other errors. The problems are otherwise helpful in terms of understanding the material nonetheless.

The book is very good and it starts describing the special nature of financial institutions and the industry. Then, in the second part you have complete chapters relating to every risk management: interest rate risk (maturity, repricing gaps and duration focuses, liquidity (e.g.maturity ladder), market risk (standarized Basel Committee and VaR approaches) credit risk (including Basel Committe standarized approach, defalult risk models like credit scoring), operating costs and technology risk, FX risk, sovereign risk.In the last part there is a good section which describes how to manage risks , including liabilty and liquidity management, deposit insurance, capital adequacy, geographic diversification, derivatives, the new credit risk management techniques and securitization.I had the chance to have Profesor Saunders as a risk management teacher and I only say that as his classes, his book is great. It shows you the best introduction to risk management. It discusses about financial institutions (banks, insurance and securities). That book just helped me to see financial institutions under the risk focus. I really recommend this book to understand risk management.

Really a fine book. Recently, I have been working a no-frills poplar extension dining-table following the indications of a number of Fine Woodworking's regular contributors. Both my brother and a good friend (both of them carpenters) said, whatever you do, don't make your own chairs, it'll take a lifetime, which then led me to a fruitless and saddening search for a chair on the various "unfinished furniture" websites. So, after receiving this particular title, I see that the included chapter on the dowel chair, which appears fairly easy to make, is perfectly analogous to the dining table I have been working on. So look around, I do not think you will find many books on the design and theory of dining-room chairs apart from this one. And thankfully, the inclusion of the "gallery of chairs" is only there to give one an idea of what it is to be a chair-design virtuoso. As for the rest, it thankfully concentrates on the essentials. For instance, roughly half of the designs as presented feature straight-back chairs, before introducing curved-back chairs towards the end.

After building 55 Adirondack chairs of my own design Friends asked me to build 2 captain chairs for a massive table. I completed that project and decided I wanted more in depth info on chair building so I took a chance on this book and I have not been disappointed. Another friend called yesterday to commission a new chair. Timing is everything. I'm putting off building my canoe yet one more time. At 70 I wonder if I'll ever get it done?

I am a beginning woodworker and wanted a book on how to build chairs. This book has some good tips on how to cut and finish the curved legs and arms of the chair. In addition it has pictures of various chairs that the author made. It was what I was looking for.

This book with help intermediate woodworkers step up to the chairmaking plate. It illustrates all of the relevant issues concerning chair structure, function, and construction. It reviews relevant details of joinery, wood selections, and construction options. There are 6-8 chairs that would fill most inside uses, of all types of construction. This is a valuable asset for the aspiring chairbuilder!

Although I give this book 4 stars, to be honest it did not help me at all. I was hoping to be able to make my own chairs but apparently lack the skills that are necessary...and the patience. I would say if you are a beginning wood worker like myself that this may not be the right book for you. That said, the book seems like to someone with the right skill set it would be very helpful. The directions seem to be pretty clear, but that doesn't change the fact that chair making is complicated!!! This book is staying on my shelf until hopefully some day I can pick it back up and actually make a darn chair. If nothing else this book made the chairs that I bought seem like a bargain, considering all of the work that goes into them!

I looked all over the Internet for this book a while back and couldn't find it. Used sellers are charging way too much (over $100), so I finally just checked it out of the library (very available and no cost). This is a good book, and is the only one I know of with general chairmaking info that covers different chair types. The other chairmaking books I've seen seem to be specific to Windsor chairs. I would like to see more books like this ... until then get this one from the library.

Jeff Miller is the BEST! Even though this book is older, it is still a valuable resource if you want to make chairs!

Has a lot of valuable information

When Things Get Dark: A Mongolian Winter's Tale, by Matthew Davis

From Publishers Weekly

Davis, a graduate student at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, recounts his two eventful years as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching in a small Mongolian town in his knowledgeable yet convoluted memoir. As a 23-year-old Midwesterner, nothing prepared him for the former Communist satellite, which is largely rural and teeming with the legacy of the Great Khan, yaks and goats being herded on the rugged steppes. Davis sees a landscape on the brink of change and a young population eager for a better life depicted in Internet cafes and media from the outside world. Yet the isolation and culture shock plunge him into a dangerous place psychologically, and alcohol abuse and mayhem result in a brutal drunken fight. Other than some standard travelogue facts on Mongolian history and culture, Davis is correct when he concludes that his brief Mongolian journey was like a flutter of an eyelid and subsequently will feel the same way to the reader. From Booklist

In 2000, at the age of 23, Davis leaves Chicago, his hometown, to travel to Mongolia to work as a teacher for the Peace Corps. Once he arrives in the small town of Tsetserleg, Davis moves into a ger, the circular tent that will be his home for the next two years, and gets to know the family whose land he is living on. He finds his students difficult to motivate, and a romance with a beautiful Mongolian teacher is heated but brief. After enduring a brutal Mongolian winter and a plague-induced quarantine, Davis finds himself falling into the trap he sees so many Mongolian men around him succumbing to: drinking constantly and giving into violent tendencies. The longer he’s in Mongolia, the deeper he falls into depression and ennui, until a violent encounter shakes him into realizing his life has to change. Both a raw personal examination and an insightful look at Mongolian history and culture, Davis’ illuminating memoir sheds light on a remote region. --Kristine Huntley

Having lived in Mongolia for nearly 11 years including during the time this book covers, I have to say that Davis is very accurate in his portrayal of countryside life and of the state of the country. He's brutally honest about his experiences, not all of which paint a good picture of him, yet still comes out looking good at the end, mainly because he just truly seems to love Mongolia and the friends he made here. I kept thinking how he must have cringed to have his mom and dad read it after describing their visit to the country and admitting all he hid from them.I've heard the history portions of the book described as boring and filler, but I actually felt it was the most accessible book on Mongolian history that I've read, because he connects everything with real life. That said, his experience will most probably not mirror that of other ex-pats living in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, or even tourists visiting the countryside. Tourism is becoming sophisticated here. I would not, however, recommend visiting in the winter. Come in the summer when it's gorgeous! If you can brave the cold, come in the fall.A definite read for any Peace Corps volunteer coming to Mongolia. No, actually, you should read it even if you're just interested in Mongolia. It's well written, a good book.

I have to say that I was quite surprised by this one. After reading many reviews on the book I finally got it not really having high expectations for it. It was a great book though. Very well written. I even enjoyed the historical sections and wished for more. This is much more than just a story about a drunk guy getting into fights in Mongolia, as many reviews would lead you to think. It's a story that involves the author, and what he was going through during his stay in Mongolia. I almost thought that I would be reading some badly written book by some stupid kid, but was pleasantly surprised at the writing style and content. Highly recommended for those interested in Mongolia or looking for a "real" peace corp story or travelogue. A great read and a great story from someone who has an opinion and something to say, and isn't scared to say it.

I think this book will really resonate with foreigners living in Mongolia and English teachers working in foreign countries. As someone who has done both, I enjoyed this book a lot. It touched on many of the issues foreigners find difficult to deal with in Mongolia, including drinking, fighting, and hate crimes. It also didn't sugar coat English teaching as a Peace Corps assignment. If you had any naive views about English teaching in developing countries, this book generally dispels them.I enjoyed the author's writing style, however I wasn't a big fan of the history sections throughout the book because they were a little overly long.In the Kindle edition there were some weird typos. Words would have spaces in them so the word "organization" would be "org aniza tion". There were a lot of these typos and It was a little distracting.Overall a very enjoyable read about how life in Mongolia really is.

Such an interesting read. A true story of a young man's time with the Peace Corps in Mongolia - lots of historical information as well as human interest.

As a RPCV from mongolia, myself, it was a very interesting read. The book arrived in great condition and i'm glad to have a clean hardcover of it.

This honest tale is a good introduction to Mongolia for somebody who has never been there. It also tell an inspireing tale of trying to adept into a foreign culture while holding on to something of yourself. Highly readable!

This book caught my eye recently. Here's my take on it.First though, some background. As a kid I saw a movie about Genghis Khan and got interested in Mongolia. At the time - many years ago - it was communist and VERY isolated. Of course, it had always been isolated I guess - the word Mongolia used to be a virtual synonym for isolation at one time. (I must confess that I use it that way to make a point in a seminar that I give, but that is another story.) Needless to say, there was not much real information on it that I ever saw until quite recently and even now it seems minimal. So, we now have this book. The author spent time in Mongolia recently as an English teacher and seems to have gotten immersed into the local situation in a time of great change. He lived in a ger - the circular tent looking house of Mongolia and took up some local habits. It seems winter there is pretty hard to say the least. Many bizarre anecdotes. One of the local habits he took up was drinking a LOT and getting into at least one very violent fight - the scene with him in the hospital with kidney damage after that tells you how bad it was. A bit shocking, but maybe it tells us more about what things are really like there than we might get in say National Geographic. Not you standard travelogue although there is some of that too. Give the author some credit for honesty, and he did seem to learn something important from the experience and not everyone might. Some interesting perspective. Give it a try, but be warned that it is not for the faint of heart.
