I kept hearing great things about Kristen Ashley's books so I decided to finally read one. I picked The Gamble and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was a lot different than what I expected but in a good way. First of all, I love reading nice, long novels that really allow readers to get comfortable and immerse themselves in the characters' lives. It took me a little while to get into it and figure out what was going on with everyone but once that happened, I couldn't stop reading! This book was also a combination of romance, humor, drama (LOTS of drama), suspense, just to name a few. There were a few parts to the book that I was not expecting at all and I'll admit my heart was pounding because I was getting a bit nervous at what was going to happen next, but in the end, everything worked out for the best. I loved Nina's fiery attitude and how Max forced her to face her fears and open up to him. Overall, I really liked this book and I am looking forward to reading more of Kristen Ashley's books! I would recommend them to anyone!

** spoiler alert ** This book was my first KA book. It did not wow me, it did not move me in any particular way.The writing was not what I expected. It seemed very scattered; and maybe that's because the main character, Nina, is supposed to be a scatterbrained woman. I just got very annoyed with all the run-on sentences and random slang. The plot was a bit scattered too. I realize my opinion on this is the minority, but I felt that the book could have ended in 300 pages, not 600. It didn't need all the extra.I also did not like the diminishing of the abusive man, Damon, in this story. This person is an abusive guy, that beats up Nina multiple times, and yet she's easily recovered because Max comes and saves the day. It's not real, and I realize this is a fiction story, but it diminishes the mental strain an abused person goes through after the abuse. The reality is that she wouldn't just call the abuser "my macho mountain man stalker" like it's a light-hearted thing. She wouldn't be okay to just cover it up with make-up, or in another scene, let her man feel her up right after. I was so annoyed by this that I almost stopped reading the book.Another thing KA diminishes is Rape. There is a character that has gone through the trauma of being violated and raped two weeks prior to Nina coming to Gnaw Bone. Yet this girl is skip dancing around the house? Come on. Let's not pretend that she was just fine immediately after. There were some serious actions taken by this character that did reflect that she wasn't fine, but I felt the writing was very insensitive for the two topics mentioned above.I also HATE how weak of a woman Nina is. She isn't strong, she isn't smart, she is annoying and flighty. She can't come up with a solid sentence to save her life. All the "Um....I'm sorry....Huh?" sentences grated on my nerves. All in all, I will read another KA book to see if this is a pattern or if this book was just a one-off miss. As this was my first KA book, I'll give it another chance.I also realize my review and poor rating is an outlier among all the positive reviews. I will accept that as I do not take lightly to serious issues that affect women being trivialized in this way.

I have read 3 KA books, each from a different series. This one was my last for oh, so many reasons. This review may contain minor *SPOILERS*.After slogging through Nina and Max's story, I've decided that KA is a one-note writer. All her stories are repetetive, with too much going on and a lot of inexplicable drama to take away from the MC's. All her H/h are the same persons, just repackaged, renamed and relocated. All her men are controlling, possessive Neanderthals with poor language skills, but they're HOT so that makes their "Me Man, you woman" mentality okay. They are utter jerks, but since they're hurting it's okay. When they're upset they have the power to brainwash their women. Even when clearly RIGHT the heroine suddenly is convinced she's wrong and also the worst. person. ever."OMG! what was I thinking? I suck! He's so perf and I don't deserve him!"I refer to the 'big conflict' in The Gamble. No KA hero can speak in full sentences, but in this instance Max magically regains the ability and blisters Nina with a self-indulgent guilt-trip because she knew about his dead wife and didn't tell him. Worse, she couldn't read his tiny mind! She didn't automatically KNOW that he was struggling with how to tell her. Oh, the humanity!Right. Sorry dude, it was YOUR responsibility to tell her about your wife, BEFORE you basically strong-armed her into uprooting her entire life because after just a week you fancy her as 'yours.'Max knew Nina's whole history but withheld his own and then had the stones to tear her to shreds and walk out on her. Hell no.And did Nina make him work back into her good graces? Oh no, because a KA hero never shows remorse or lowers himself to an apology and Cro-Magnon mountain man Wonder Max is no exception. Although to be fair, ol Maxi pad did admit he made a mistake once or twice. He didn't learn from them but hey, it's sort of an apology, right? But Nina, like all KA heroines, is TSTL. These women are supposed to be strong and so amazingly special that they are the ONLY ones able to reach the poor, damaged hero. In actuality, they are spineless, weak doormats who allow their will to be subverted, forget who they are and constantly make excuses for the abhorrent behaviours of their men. Being a KA heroine also means that the ability to express herself drains away (probably from all the sex the hero uses to keep the lil' woman in line). She is left unable to get more tgan a word in through all that manly grunting - "But...", "well...", "um...", "sorry?" and of course my favourite, the hero's name on ineffectual repeat. Goals for life, I tell ya.I have yet to meet a woman who finds being micromanaged attractive. No intelligent, self-respecting, capable woman wants to be so posessed and protected she can't even use the toilet alone. Forcing your will on another, ignoring their protests and controlling every aspect of their lives is not love. It's sick, and I'm convinced that this writer has a very twisted view of love, relationships and what women find desireable in a man. Thanks, but no thanks. 1 star, because I have to.

i love this little book as a very concise review of the basics. i noticed many typos with the first edition, and they were not all corrected in the second edition - frustrating at best, clinically risky at worst. the tabs also peel apart after minimal usage on both editions.

Excellent size and quality of page material with exception to the tabs. The only problem... so many errors! WHY? Quite irritating to the SRNA.

It's great! Bright colors, nice pictures, easy to maneuver. Small and compact, but easy to read. Concise, but good information.

Love it! It's simple and easy to use!

Seen a colleague had one and decided I needed to have one. Handy, pocket size guide book. Contains helpful info for quick reference. Easy to carry around.

Thought this pocket guide would be great...it's small, spiral bound, and seemed to have useful information but I did not care for it. It just never seemed to have the information I was looking about particular topics. I sold this back after a short period because I got absolutely no use out of it. There is a much better pocket guide on the market

Good little book with much information. I use it several times as a reference and if I need more detail then I go to another source.

Okay book but i think there are better books out there with more technical data

True Grit: A Novel, by Charles Portis

Review

"Tom Wolfe, who worked with Portis as a reporter at the "New York Herald-Tribune" in the early 1960s called him the original laconic cutup. A generation of novelists since then have simply regarded him as a writers] writer and have made his name a sort of secret password. Soon, they'll no longer have him to themselves." --"Rolling Stone" "An epic and a legend." --"The Washington Post" "Like Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" and Thomas Berger's "Little Big Man", Charles Portis's "True Grit" captures the naive elegance of the American voice." -- Jonathan Lethem "An instant classic. Read it and have the most fun you've had reading a novel in years, maybe decades." --"Newsday" "Skillfully constructed, a comic tour de force." --"The New York Times Book Review" "Charles Portis details the savagery of the 1870s frontier through an astonishing narrative voice: that of the 14-year-old Mattie Ross, a flinty, skeptical, Bible-thumping scourge." --"Wall Street Journal" "I loved that book. Charles Portis got a real Mark Twain feeling, the cynicism and the humor. I tried to buy the book myself." --John Wayne

If you are a fan of either of the True Grit Movies, be it the John Wayne title or the more recent 2010 remake with Jeff Bridges, you'll enjoy this book. Both films stick to the book in their own way, but in my opinion the newer release sticks closer to the original plot and tone of the book; although both add and take away in places. Overall, even if you haven't seen the film I'd recommend it as it is a captivating but quick read (I finished It in one night). My only complaint is it is not longer, but sometimes the greatest pieces get to the point quicker than others.

What makes True Grit the fine novel it is ,is it's brilliant use of first person narrative by its main character.Mattie Ross is a 14 year old girl who goes through something that winds up defining her for life.It grabs you at the beginning and holds you to the end. Most readers will probably have seen one or both movie versions. That's not a problem. One impression you'll almost certainly have is this is a western. It is.But it's a western set in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma not the Rio Bravo. The novel is as much or more Southern as it is Western. All the principles have a connection to the Civil War.The older men fought for the Confederacy. The Indians in Oklahoma(Indian Territory) fought for the Confederacy.Federal Judge Parker is a carpetbagger and Republicans are a scurvy lot.Mattie's political commentary is priceless. There is an afterword by Donna Tart that is surprisingly mediocre.Tart has little of interest to say. While she claims to be an aficionado of the book ,her grasp of the historical setting is shaky. The novel is almost certainly set in 1878.It can't be before 1877 because Rutherford B. Hayes is president and it can't be after his term ended which is March 1881.I can't prove this but I think the novel is a 50 year anniversary reverie by Mattie Ross which takes place in 1928.You know it's 1928 because Mattie talks of her belief that Al Smith will be elected president.Tart says the novel takes place shortly after the Civil War which is correct if you consider 13 years , shortly after. She also says the novel is reflected through Mattie's memories in the early 1900's.Well if you consider 1928 the early 1900's , that's correct. However I have a suspicion Tart thinks Mattie's reflections take place in 1903 when she goes to see Rooster Cogburn in the Wild West Show. After mapping out the history in my head ,I checked to see what others think and I realized a lot of reviewers miss the comments on Hayes and Smith. That's too bad because if you don't grasp the political and historical context of the novel you're missing part of it and a dimension of Mattie.

After reading a string of unimpressive books, True Grit surprised me and made me remember what it was that I love about reading! From the first page, it hooks you. I found the main character, Mattie, to be so likable (in both the book and film) and strong. It’s hard to not admire a character with such strength and determination. She’s looking for the man who killed her father and has hired the U.S. Marshall with the most grit to aid her. A Texas Ranger, LaBeouf also joins up with them for the mission. There are so many times when she’s told that she can’t do something and then does it anyways. Her age and sex do not stand in the way of anything for her.I did see the Coen brother’s version of the movie before reading the book, but as I was reading along I could see that most of the dialogue from the movie was taken directly from the book. I love when a book and movie can be so similar, it makes visualizing the characters and events much easier. The dialogue is also incredibly witty, smart and funny (when it’s meant to be).I loved this book! I tore through it in a matter of days. It’s a fun story, exciting throughout the entire read, the characters are likable (even when they’re rude!) and overall, this is just an excellent read. Highly recommended!

It's not everyday that a book written nearly 40 years ago is still appealing, fresh, clever, and marvelous to read. I knew that there had to be something here (I mean, it's been made into two films) but I wasn't sure about reading a western (especially a YA western). Any fears that you may have that this book will not engage and entertain you can be safely laid to rest.My favorite genre is still thriller novels, gruesome serial killers or dark broken women (think Gone Girl) but I have to say this book was very refreshing and while a light, quick read (I spent a few hours in basically one sitting to finish) it wasn't light on content or message.Quite often in these cases I'd be writing "the book is so much better than the film" but I have to say that in this case the films (I've seen both versions) stayed fairly true to the book (the more recent version being more "gutsy").Anyway, if you're reading this far, go ahead and purchase the book and trust me that you won't be disappointed.

This is an American classic that is underappreciated despite generating two popular Hollywood movies. Charlie Portis's writing is fantastic, and his character development is top-notch. This is a gripping and exciting novel that is much better than either of the namesake movies. This tells the story of a brave young woman seeking her father's murderer. Along the way she is joined by two complex characters, one a drunken US Marshall and the other a self-obsessed Texas Ranger. All three join forces (sometimes) to seek the murder and the rest of the murderer's gang. The adventure travels through the rugged wilds of late 1800s Arkansas and Oklahoma. This is the quintessential great American novel.
