This is a very well done book and the pictures and text are wonderful. I recommend it to anyone interest the history of the Hajj and associated photos.

What a treasure!Look what I found at a Periplus bookshop here in Bali! This beautiful book was only 100,000 rp (that's less than $10 US). . . what a bargain for such a treasure.. . it is a bargain at any price! Wish I could buy a whole stack full and give them away. I have more than a dozen books on Hajj. . . several coffee table books. . .including Hajjj Paintings! . but this is most beautiful offering. . . from the British Museum and in the US from Harvard University Press. . . nearly 300 pages. . each two-page spread is its own related topic. . with extraordinary visuals and excellent commentary.

This is a wonderful expose' into the Hajj and its history although I must caution that it is not intended as a guide for a Haaji, but rather a book intended to show the beauty of Hajj, its rites and the undertakings of those who perform and intend to perform it. Finally, a book I could finish and truly enjoy. She makes you care about her very human characters. The plight of Chinese immigrants was harrowing. Their reasons for coming to the U.S. were varied, but their struggles to succeed the same. In light of our present day immigration issues, this is a timely book. I look forward to reading other novels by Ms. Ibrahim.

PAPER WIFE by Laila IbrahimMei Ling is the younger daughter in a newly impoverished family. When her sister is betrothed to a complete stranger, Mei is happy it is not her and unhappy to see her sister leving China for the United States. Very quickly, everything changes when Mei Ling’s sister becomes ill and Mei Ling is forced to impersonate her sister and marry the stranger.Well written and researched, this novel tells of “wives,” “daughters,” “sons and cousins” paid for and brought to the US as “paper relatives” in the early 1920’s. It has become impossible to emigrate to the US and China is suffering greatly. This subterfuge to bring impoverished Chinese to the US often results in prostitution and servitude. Mei Lings fears are not unfounded.Ibrahim has written an engrossing tale of one such “paper wife.” Her characters are clearly drawn, the sights, smells and inhabitants of San Francisco’s Chinatown are related in intimate detail. A mesmerizing tale that book groups will love.5 of 5 stars

This book held my attention throughout. Character development and story line were most interesting. I learned much about the immigration history of our country, of which I was completely unaware. I will recommend this for book club reading due to its relativity to current immigration concerns in our country. “Give me your tired, your poor” has had many disruptions during our country’s brief history, sadly !

This is an outstanding story about the struggles of immigrants as they desperately try to improve their lives and those they call family. BRAVO! Although It is historical fiction, it is an extremely timely novel. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free." Well done, Laila Ibrahim!

I really enjoyed this book, and I like the characters. I kept waiting for it to get depressing, considering the subject, but never did. I found it very uplifting. People are basically good. Women are strong. True in life, and true in the book. It must have taken an amazing amount of research too. I loved her other two books also. Will look forward to the next.

This book was very meaningful to me as my mother was born and raised in China and Angel Island a special destination as a child for me. The story of Mei Ling and her horrendous trip from Asia to California was experienced by thousands. It was appalling , but the determination of so many Chinese to better themselves, study hard, work endlessly and live the dream became reality. Kai Li, her paper husband, who proved his worth and devotion to her and his children. And a faith in beliefs, centuries old. Beautifully written and a tribute to so many. Highly recommended.

These days immigration is much in the news and now with the government shutdown over the southern wall/ barrier, I found this very interesting about the Chinese immigration in 1920's. I had know about the Chinese labor to build the transcontinental railroad, but was unaware about Angel Island and the restrictions that resulted. I also had heard of paper wife, but t did not know the definition. I learned a lot and can recommend it to anyone searching for answers about current immigration problems.

I always learn a lot by reading this authors 's books. Please keep them coming! I was aware of the prejudice of Chinese families in the U S but didn't realize the extent of the legislation surrounding it. Will we ever learn ? History repeats itself for people who don't care to read !

I've never lived in New York, but I've visited many times, and I always enjoy that first view of the monumental skyline. New York is a city best appreciated on foot, where you can be alive to its vibrant street-level sensations. Everywhere you look, there are extraordinary buildings and streetscapes, and I always find myself asking, "How did Tudor City come to be where it is?", or "Why does Broadway cut across the grid as it does? For that matter, why is there a grid?", or "Why is there so much art deco styling here, anyway?"I had read many of Davidson's pieces on architecture for New York magazine, so I was eager to see what he could do with a whole book devoted to walking around this magnificent city. Well, quite a lot, it turns out. The book is organized around a set of walking tours of various neighborhoods, which open your eyes not only to the physical environment of the city today, but also to the historical background that shaped what you see, as well as the social concerns of the time and how those came to be reflected in the architecture and layout. It's incredibly interesting reading. I'm not a keen student of history, but I find that knowing the past-tense why and how makes it far more interesting to see what is there now.Interspersed with the walking tours are a handful of interludes that consider city-wide themes. Probably my favorite is "City of Towers", in which Davidson explores the history and development of New York's most iconic building form, the skyscraper. He goes into the history, of course, but also into the urge to build ever higher, economics be damned, and the technological developments that make these displays of raw ego possible. It's an amazing chapter, that ranges from the enormous, blocky 432 Park residential tower to the Burj Dubai, currently the world's tallest building, and considers the possibility of even more lofty perches. But Davidson's true genius lies in illuminating the psychology of these towers. What is it like to perch in a $100 million penthouse suite, 1400 feet in the air? How does it affect ordinary New Yorkers to watch their skyline change, as it always has and always will? What kind of social culture emerges from a city that is lived at street level and high in the clouds?If you buy this book and use it as a guidebook to discover a fascinating city (perhaps one you think you know well already), you won't be disappointed. But what elevates this book to a much higher level is Davidson's extraordinary writing. Davidson holds these questions up in his scrupulously careful hand, turning them slowly and examining them from a range of angles – all informed by a deep, deep knowledge of New York City history, literature, buildings and neighborhoods.Davidson has done an astonishing amount of both walking and reading in and around New York City. The book is full of wonderful nuggets of information. It makes a grand walking companion in some of the city’s most economically and architecturally interesting neighborhoods – with a particular focus on downtown Manhattan. But it is also a fine companion for the armchair tourist. Davidson colorfully conjures up the places about which he writes – and his deeper goal is to talk about preservation, development, architectural quality, gentrification and the changing city.What’s particularly remarkable about the book’s discussions, particularly the thematic chapters that Davidson calls “Interludes,” about streets, towers, glass and apartments, is its even-handedness. Davidson obviously cares deeply about these issues – but he’s no zealot: and that’s likely to upset some readers. I say, “great.” For example, preservationists in this town for the most part have a “take no prisoners approach” – you are either for them or against them. No one can doubt Davidson’s commitment to great design and public spaces – but he recognizes the tradeoffs and ironies that are inherent in the preservationist project. Not only does preservation of existing structures and neighborhoods inhibit economic growth, but it also makes building housing more expensive. Preservationists need to be wary of simply engaging in the protection and enhancement of property values of upper middle class neighborhoods, homeowners and the position of entitled rent stabilized tenants. It can be argued that such efforts contribute to the city’s economic inequality. One of the great ironies of the thinking and work of Jane Jacobs, as Davidson points out, is that the lively, diverse West Village she vehemently tried to protect now constitutes some of the most expensive residential property on the planet – in no small part due to her efforts and those of her preservationist followers.Good policy-making and design in the public sphere are always questions of balance – physically, politically and economically. Davidson makes this case well – and carefully lays out the tradeoffs: between artistic integrity and the pedestrian experience and urban context; among the use of glass, masonry and steel; and between development and preservation. Yes, historic preservation is essential to the character of the city. The streetscape needs both high design structures and vernacular buildings. This is not a zero sum game – a growing city needs some of all of these elements. The Magnetic City is a great read, a useful guide and provides thought provoking and important analysis of some of the most pressing issues facing the city.

This book is beautifully written and provides a fascinating explanation of New York neighborhoods. Having long been a fan of New York, living there , I found this book to be completely engaging. I look forward to taking some of the walking tours .

Cynthia Gabriel, I hope this becomes a mainstay for every mom. A mom centered resource companion that journeys with her through the postpartum period. It gives women simplistic guidance all in one place.As a postpartum doula and advocate for maternal mental health, this is a must read for EVERY new mom. Realistic expectations and a support system are dire in the fourth trimester for any mom, let alone a new mom. I believe we fail our moms terribly by putting so much emphasis around labor and delivery with little focus on the postpartum period. As the book reads, we need more balance between prenatal care and postpartum support. Our western culture needs to embrace mothers during this crucial time. When a baby is born, so is a mother. I will recommend this book again and again.

I had hoped that this book would give me tips with "how to proceed" now that I have my baby in my arms. But unfortunately, it did not have any information in it that I would consider useful. It was also organized very poorly. Almost nonchalantly. The information was broad and somewhat vague. Really not worth it.

Such a helpful book for the days and months right after baby arrives.

Excellent book!

This book is such a gift to new parents! Cynthia does a wonderful job combining traditional wisdom, science and commonsense recommendation. "The Fourth Trimester Companion" avoids judgement and instead helps families find and feel confident in the best parenting approach for their own baby. She identifies true problems that families might encounter postpartum, but also explores what is normal adjustment after a baby (from sleep to sex — the postpartum sex chapter is especially great!). This book doesn't just rehash the same old advice, but offers a fresh perspective from an experienced mother, anthropologist and doula. As a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, and doula trainer, I'm recommending "The Fourth Trimester Companion" to all of my students, clients and the doulas I train. Get it!

If you are going to have a baby, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It absolutely saved my life after my first baby came. The amount of practical wisdom and guidance combined with the invitation to really learn to trust myself as a mother was the best form of support I could have imagined! Cynthia is clearly an experienced birth professional who has learned a tremendous amount from her many years of experience, which she generously shares with us in this book. She is quite thorough in her explanation of the different phases a woman naturally experiences postpartum, which made me feel so much more sane and way less alone. She provides so many resources for new moms to get additional support, which is critical during such an intense time. Cynthia describes how to navigate all of the changing relationships post birth – from partners to grandparents to other children, to animals. It’s by far the most thorough and comprehensive book out there on the postpartum period.Honestly, I have reccomendedthis book to everyone I know who is having or just had a baby. I wish I lived closer to her so that she could be my doula when I have my next baby.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

I became interested in Alex Honnold after the 60 minutes story. I never forgot his name, and just got around to ordering this book for my Kindle during an extended medical leave due to surgery . I thoroughly enjoyed his descriptions of the many "rocks" he's climbed. Having never been a climber myself, I was afraid it would be too technical to hold my interest. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was fascinated by his explaining how and why he's chosen to do this with his life. I also enjoyed reading about his various climbing partners and their adventures. I wish I had heard of him before our family visited Yosemite in 2011, as I would have heeded the park stranger's invitation to spend some time in El Cap meadow with a pair of binoculars to watch the climbers.

Very well written and well balanced book, between narrative and Alex's own writing. Incredible stories that will live on forever. I love the lack of ego in this book. Not many people in this world seem to appreciate the world the way Alex does. Everything is just very honest.This is a must read for climbers and non-climbers. It is about being a good person and loving what you do. Although not everyone can have the luxury to live in a van and climb in world's most beautiful rocks, we can take part in paying Mother Nature some extra appreciation and finding a side kick of something we love aside from our jobs.Glad to have people like Alex in the world everyone to look to for inspiration. Good people are awesome.

In my youth I climbed the route Alex went up in 3 days of the hardest climbing I had ever climbed.I spent the whole book nervously reading, it’s been 25 years since I have been in the route but still remember those cruxes. The achievements Alex has made in his career are incredible. To the non-climbers the choices on routes Alex chooses to solo may seem crazy, to those of us who have climbed seriously know how insanely bold those decisions are. The only place I have ever experienced complete concentration with no outside influences was leading a pitch. I could relate to Alex’s descriptions and emotional battles. He is in a class of his own, I hope to never open a paper to find out we have lost this person.

I was surprised after reading Alone On The Wall to discover that David Roberts is a climber, because when I was reading this book, it really seemed like he didn't "get it". It didn't seem like Roberts really understood or was on board with what Honnold was and is doing--his lifestyle, his climbing, and yes, his free soloing. Maybe it was because he didn't insert his own opinion into things--a lot of Roberts' writing is just summarizing interviews with other people. But there's a ton of people out there who either don't climb or climb more conservatively who have opinions about Honnold, and if I wanted to hear that, I'd read any of the hundreds of articles about Honnold on the internet. This book was a chance to hear from Honnold and find out what he thinks, and instead Roberts' writing is about what everyone else thinks--I just don't care about that.For the parts of the book which were actually written by Honnold--a lot of what he wrote is just responding to what other people say, which yields some insights, but I'd much rather have read what Honnold wanted to say. The problem here maybe is that Honnold doesn't want to say anything--he'd rather be out climbing. Which is great--that's how he became the climber who inspires me. But it doesn't make for a great book.I'll also point out that this book was published two years ago as of this review, and was probably mostly written in the year before that. In that time, I've seen Honnold mature a lot--his interviews on TV and podcasts show a person who has had a lot of emotional and mental growth over the last few years. The Honnold who wrote passages in Alone On The Wall is not the Honnold we know today--the one who wrote this is a bit immature, a bit distracted. I get the feeling that Honnold was pressured to write this book a bit before he was really ready to be writing a book--it's a bit weird to write your story before it's over. I really hope this isn't the last book we see from Honnold, because I think if he were to write a book now or later in his life, it would be a lot better.Contrast this with The Push by Tommy Caldwell. There's a book written by an older climber who knew what he wanted to write. At the surface level, it turns out to be a book that's much less about climbing, but it's far more vulnerable and insightful, and gives readers a much better understanding of what motivated Caldwell to become one of the best climbers in the world.

Was absolutely captivated. Especially by the first 3 or 4 chapters which explain the Video shoots of Alex free-solo climbing and how he became a modern legend. Very interesting as he explains what he's thinking and his mental preparation for free soloing. Also how he approaches his climbs and general outlook on life and risk-taking. If you watch his videos on YouTube, you'll buy and read the book. What he can do on the face of sheer mountain faces is unbelievable and has to be seen to be believed.

Disappointing for a Stonewall Kitchen cookbook. Their other cookbooks are some of my favorites. This one was basic, with recipes like guacamole, popcorn with seasonings, etc. Things I think I can figure out on my own. Was hoping for some inspiration. This book doesn't have it.

This book has many interesting ideas for appetizers. I think it's best use is that it will spark your own ideas for new things to try. I have found all the Stonewall cookbooks to be very well done, enjoyable to read with tasty results.

We had a tapas party for the Rotary Club and they raved about all the recipes! One idea is to put the miniature cupcake pan upside down on a foil lined tray and form the pancetta around the OUTSIDE of the forms for perfect "pancetta cups", page 99.Happy entertaining!

i have often made a meal out of small bites and have since way before it had a name! these appetizers are not only healthy, beautiful and health conscious but creative! the 'stonewall kitchen' cookbooks are pieces of art...and mine sits atop a stack of treasured books in my kitchen. they achieve the deceiving simplicity of flavors perfectly meshed to tantalize the taste and intrigue the senses....you really will want just one more bite and, if you're lucky, one more sip to accompany it.

Love all the Stonewall books and products. I have been to the store a number of timesand get so many great ideas.

I wanted to love this. In part, the story is just hard. Lucy Maud Montgomery did not have an easy life and for someone who wrote such beloved characters, I couldn’t help wishing her story was different, even though I have read her story before. I think the book was well-researched, and the illustrations were beautiful. I believe the book has a younger intended audience, and it is written in a way that suggests it is for children, but some of the content would require care even for adults. I want to give a fair review, but I wish that the writing style contained more beauty, more flow... I think that any time we read L.M. Montgomery, even if we are reading another author’s words about her, the expectation is higher.I would recommend this book to the person looking for a factual account of her life, but not to someone who is looking for more of the worlds she shared in her books.

I purchased this book as a gift for my girlfriend, who is a big L. M. Montgomery fan, and she absolutely loved it. She couldn't stop talking about it, in fact. She loved the writing style of the biography and found the book to be very interesting.

This was interesting and informative. It is very matter of fact and easy to read. Also, the illustrations are really cute. I would recommend to anyone interested in learning basic facts about L.M. Montgomery's life.

Wonderful biography of one of the most famous authors in children's literature. This book is for anyone who has read and loved "Anne of Green Gables," and for anyone who hasn't even heard of it. Rosenberg vividly presents Maud with all her struggles and triumphs.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned things about L.M. Montgomery that I never knew before. Ms. Rosenberg did a wonderful job researching and writing it.

I fell into it and was wholeheartedly immersed in L. M. Montgomery’s life. Even while not reading it, I still felt as though my heart and mind were with L. M. Montgomery. Certainly, I couldn’t stop talking about it, as my husband could attest. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been completely absorbed in a book, and reading this was such a wonderful experience.L. M. Montgomery, or “Maud,” as she was called, is absolutely one of my favorite authors ever. I’ve read a good chunk of her works (and she was a prolific writer!), so to learn more about her experiences and what inspired her stories–especially those of Anne Shirley and Emily–was a lovely experience to begin with. It’s clear to see that Rosenberg loves Montgomery and her stories as well, because reading this as almost as close as reading a memoir, it was so filled with empathy and emotion. I felt like I was in a conversation with a friend, talking about another friend. It was a sort of: “Did you hear about Maud? She published a book!” kind of thing. I was joyous over Maud’s triumphs and saddened over how much loss and sadness she had within her life, but it’s a comfort to know that for all her struggles, she loved her writing, and those stories live on for us today thanks to her.Rosenberg gives a comprehensive overview of Maud’s life, from early childhood to late adulthood. I love that she was able to include direct quotes from the personal journal of L. M. Montgomery, which added a great touch of personality and authenticity to situation. It’s nicely paced–I never felt as though too much or too little time was spent on one thing. I LOVED some of the humorous anecdotes told. L. M. Montgomery could be one funny lady.What I most appreciated, however, was the frank discussion of mental illness. Both Montgomery and her husband seem to have had some forms of depression and anxiety, and I am so grateful to Rosenberg for tackling that head-on. The more we talk about these things, the more we share both the struggles and successes of people who live with this diseases, the more we normalize them and are able to seek help in managing them. It’s especially important for young people who might not know how to deal with what they’re feeling and what they may be experiencing to know that even those we look up to struggle with the same thing. I’m so glad this was included.This biography is magical, truly. I felt completely transported reading it and it’s been one of my absolutely favorite reads this year. Every Montgomery fan will find something to love about it, and I’m so glad I was able to learn more about L. M. Montgomery’s life and experiences. Thank you so much to Liz Rosenberg for writing this and Candlewick Press for publishing this. It’s extraordinary.

At one crucial juncture he levels well-deserved criticism at Noam Chomsky for his reaction to 9/11. It’s about time someone on the left had the decency to repudiate the leftist attitude Walzer rejects there, the blinkered notion that we got what we deserved.Walzer makes the case for a sane global-minded commitment to human rights and shared prosperity. Rather than blather about replacing the nation-state in the name of some fool’s utopia, he focuses on how nation-states can help foster human flourishing across the globe — and what role a “decent left” should play in helping that happen.Above all, it is vitally important, especially with 2020 coming, to note that Walzer’s notion of the left confronts the world as it is now and also the abominations past so-called left regimes caused. He forthrightly condemns the toxic outgrowths of Marxist-Leninism that made the left synonymous, in the twentieth century, with dictatorship and massacre.
