I am not a Texas banker, lawyer or West Texas big time wheeler-dealer ... but I have known and even been friends with a few. These real characters and actions are way bigger than ones Larry McMurtry does mostly I think because Larry sticks with what he knows and seems poignant but real (ranchers, cowboys, ex-wives, Hollywood, Houston and general Texas iconic stuff). Who doesn't want to see a train wreck of egos, fears and dreams with no spotless heroes or pure evil villains? We even have a lawyer claiming he gets sex with a Cotton Queen because she is an agent trying to get information. I like shifting through the researched, organized and categorized wreckage, could not put the book down. Maybe the tornado that came along and blew a big chunk of Lubbock away was just a God or fate deal -- lancing a boil. I say Billy Sol Estes talked St. Peter into inspiring this book. Long live Sam Houston, remember Billy Lee Brammer! I say Homer ditched his long time bank -- there is an old saying about going from bad to worse and therein is a tale.

This is a terrific book that follows the travails of a businessman betrayed by his banker. In that era, bankers were expected to keep their word just like partners and professionals. A good banker was usually the difference between a successful an unsuccessful businessman. This is a really good book that everyone should read. Reads like a novel.

Kudos go to Broadus Spivey and Jesse Sublett for shining a light on an important piece of Texas history that would have otherwise faded away from the public's eye. Spivey’s encyclopedic legal knowledge and storytelling ability combined with Sublett’s excellent writing and research skills made a often complex ten year legal battle into an interesting and understandable read.

As A Tech Alumae, I loved reading about early Lubbock...one to the friendliest and best places anywhere...until the the sand rolls in. I couldn't follow all the legal maneuvers, but liked the story.

Really enjoyed the history of the book. Events long before my day but interesting read for those employed in the banking industry.

For background: I have combined type ADHD, I struggle equally with inattention and impulse control. I do have issues with overwhelm (mostly from sensory overload/overstimulation) but don't have problems with mental flexibility.Pros:- I appreciate that most of the advice and guided exercises are written in list form. It makes it easy to flip through the book and find something you wanted to review.- The advice is clear and actionable. It's easy to see whether each exersise would be useful and how, and to adapt the steps to suit your specific needs/goals.Con:- I found the conversational style of the book's main passages to be tedious to get through. The author seems likeable and all, but I bought this book because I can hardly get through the normal tasks of my life. I don't need the advice to be fluffed up with asides and examples.Grey area:- The advice hinges on your ability to take notes throughout your day and to review those notes. I do appreciate that there are specific pointers about how to break up tasks properly into notes and what to write down. There are also some general tips about maintaining a notebook. It just seems like a bit of a stretch to me. If I could keep track of a notebook why would I be here? At the same time, I feel a self help book can reasonably ask the reader to make changes and put in work, so overall I'm not too mad about it.There was no really groundbreaking advice in this book, but having it contained into lists I can easily reference in the future should be helpful.

The book than dives into separate chapters for each skill.Each chapter lays out strategies to help you work on the areas that you are struggling with. A notebook is recommended to take notes and also work out the various activities inside the book.This was a very interesting and informative book. Even if one does not have ADHD there are strategies inside that can help someone with the skill sets that are mentioned. I did enjoy reading it and did the assessments that were offered. Normally as a reviewer I pass on books on but this one I will keep to read again. It can help people with work, family and events in their lives to make life less stressful.I received this book for free from the Callisto Publishing Club but the opinions are my own.

I was happy to see that this is a VERY re-latable book, and it reads as though you are talking with a friend. The assessments are very simple and quick, and my 11 yr old realized she had more ADHD symptoms than she thought she did! By the end of the assessments, she understood there were quite a few areas she needed to work on, but most importantly, that she wasn't the ONLY one who had the same issues to solve! The improving memory section was very illuminating for her, and offered both of us new ways to think about how she handles instructions. By having her repeat them back to me, we both can verify that she not only heard, understood, but also processed them! I'm always surprised when she can practically verbatim instruct someone else, using what I thought she hadn't processed. But the book explained, how she was able to keep certain things to stick, while others, like simple directions, haven't!The section on mental flexibility was very interesting for her, as she started to see how she gets so easily distracted and how not being able to focus can be a huge problem for in her future work world. Finding out about DJ Alex Cruz (yeah I know, but if it's not Irish Dance music, we don't have it on speed download, LOL) and how a steady beat could help to FOCUS her attention was a revelation. I had never thought about steady beats in the background to help her keep focus. Now he's on whenever she does schoolwork! Being able to move and hum to the music has really HELPED her. Who knew?The section on reacting was also a huge help for her, making her realize she tends to react versus pausing before reacting. That's a huge impulse control issue. The book offers sound ideas on how to rethink her impulsiveness, and she was actually quite open to the idea presented of STOP, and has already started to use it positively.While the book isn't technically for tweens/teens, I think it's really important for them to read the book, as well as adults, who have ADHD too. By setting kids on the right path, they will have the experience of using the techniques BEFORE hitting the work environment, and be much more successful! For adults, it can really make them PAUSE and learn new techniques that can make work, and everyday life, much more manageable!Thanks to Callisto to providing me a review copy!

I bought this book as I was writing an Episcopal mass using contemporary music. The standard Anglican mass is filled with technical terms which the average parishioner will glide by without giving them a second thought. Even the title of the 'Book of Common Prayer" uses the word "Common" in a technical sense, meaning those elements of a service which do not change from week to week. In contrast to "Common" are "Propers", which change to fit the season or the saint whose day is being celebrated, or most especially with the seven major festivals of the year.Appropriate to the title of the book, its subject is not limited to matters relating to the Episcopal church. Matters arising out of both Catholic and Protestant sources are covered thoroughly. Unlike many dictionaries, it may be worth your while to read the book from cover to cover, at least to skim through it, reading every entry subject, and reading the entire entry when it interests you. You may wonder why the entry for "'The Feast of Corpus Christie" is so long. This is a Eucharist observed to celebrate the origins of the Eucharist, and it did not start on the year after Jesus died. Rather, it became popular in the 13th century.This book lacks one item essential to a really good Kindle reference book. It has no links from one entry to another, when one has a reference to an item related to the article you are reading. It would have been useful, for example, to have links between "Creed" and the three major creeds, the Nicene, the Apostles, and the Athanasian creeds. On the other hand, the Bibliography at the end of the book is generous, and not weighted down too much with excessively technical works. It would have been a boon if book references had been included in individual articles.I have yet to find a subject for which there is inadequate coverage, or no coverage.

I am new to deeper theological study. I needed a good reference for better understanding of theological language. My priest recommended this book and I have found it very helpful. Worth the full price but I was really glad to find a used copy in such good condition. Thank you Amazon.

As someone who was on my 5th trip to Puerto Vallarta, I bought the book for some new ideas on restaurants I hadn't tried, and on new activities. The book does a good job for that purpose, and for its $10 price on amazon, I can't complain. However, its coverage of other subjects is fairly poor; I would almost say downright silly. For example, it spends 75 pages going through oodles of general information with limited to no relevance to Puerto Vallarta, such as how many Starbucks in the U.S. have T-mobile hotspots, the relative benefits of Yahoo versus Hotmail accounts, and the location of the South African embassy in Mexico City. For example, it goes through pages of customs formalities on taking your car into Mexico--yet I feel it's unlikely that someone who's going only to PV is going to drive there.What makes this all the more silly is that the book devotes only 7 pages to hotels in PV. It describes two in the Marina Vallarta area, two in the northern Hotel Zone (one of which it doesn't particularly recommend, giving it one star), three downtown, and 3 in the southern Hotel Zone. Of the three hotels discussed in the downtown area, one has been long torn down (the Molino de Agua), one is kind of yucky (the Playa Los Arcos--I've stayed there), and the third is a rather quirky choice--the Hacienda San Angel. This last hotel is a long hike to any beach, and its rooms range in price from $310-$590 depending on the room and season (except one room which goes for as little as $235 in low season). I'm sure it's a fine hotel for a small niche of customers, but it's not what I would include if I had only very limited space for hotel choices in my book.The book also has some space devoted to other cities, and another one of the other hotel recommendations which I found bizarre was the "Hotelito Desconocido" (unknown little hotel). Again, there must be a market for places like this, but I suspect that the market's pretty small for a hotel with no electricity (lit by candles), almost no activities, a beach with water unsafe to swim in (no swimming allowed), and mosquitos galore with rooms going for $300-$600 a night, not including a required meal plan.I don't mean to imply this book is useless. I did learn about new places to go with it, and the price is right. However, I have issue with the choices of material the books covered: to much of certain things, and too little of others.

This 2008 portable edition out in 2007 gives an overview for the mainstream, first time tourist to the area. The back cover reads,Experience a place the way the locals do...." but in reality it'shardly more than an introduction for the non-trekker types. Maybe someone who wants to play golf, buy drinks and wade in the Ocean will gets something from this little volume; otherwise it's a superficial overview of the area.I bought the book primarily to "discover" more about Manzanillo and was disappointed that it gave so little information.

This guide book provided plenty of reviews and recommendations to help make our Puerto Vallarta vacation a memorable one. Frommer rarely disappoints!

I got some good tips from the book. It helped me get familar with the layout of the area. In short, the top things I learned from the book were:1) At the Puerto Vallarta airport keep your head down and don't talk to anyone. They're all trying to sell you something.2) Use the pedestrian walk to cross over the highway and get a cheaper cab than from the airport. (We bargained and got a $13 USD ride to Nuevo Vallarta)3) Vallarta Adventures is a reputable tour group in the area. We booked all our tours through them in advance on their website. [...]

I enjoyed this guide book. It's not super comprehensive, but then it's not meant to be. The small size enabled me to slip into my pocket and carry it with me. It had enough information to guide me around Puerto Vallarta, and we tried several of the restaurants that it recommended with good results - the La Palapa restaurant was superb! I loved that place - slightly expensive, but worth it. A very romantic beach front restaurant.Buy this guide-book and the Moon guide-book and you'll have enough information to explore the Puerto Vallarta area.
