I feel bad writing a negative review without having read the book... but Amazon advertises this as "English and Spanish Edition" and there might be a dozen spanish words sprinkled around. This just isn't what I was looking for at all.

I discovered Walking Stars, reading it with students where I worked, at a San Diego high school. The story of the two boys who went after the evil general, and the true magic of the mother's faith, grabbed me and changed me. And the story of the boy, going up against the power of the bruja, is an amazing gem!With this book, I caught the fire for Victor Villasenor's stories of his great familia. I immediately sent it to my friend who had just been imprisoned, to help strengthen him.Walking Stars is just a taste of the power of Villasenor's other books; however, the personal notes and background he includes with each story are essential to visiting his works.

Senor Villasenor is an amazingly gifted author who commits all of his knowledge and wisdom to his works. The first of his works I read was "Burro Genius" and that prompted me to purchase all of his books. They have each offered wisdom, spirituality, humility, creativity and compassion.

Is a very pretty book, the stories are about the magic of life and, about many things that we can see around us. I highly recommend this book!!!

Wonderful, as is all of Victor's work. Deeply moving and inspiring.

I have not had time to read this book yet, but I am looking forward to Christmas break so I have some leisure reading time! Loved Rain of Gold.

Since I read Rain of Gold first, I noticed that a couple of vignettes in the book were cited from it, but nevertheless, I still enjoyed the read. These are stories from the heart, and for non-practicing Catholics, it certainly explains away a family's faith and spirituality as a away of living, coping and survival.

This is a great book for learning About the History of the Church of the Brethern and how it came about from the Traditional Brethern Church. ie Dunkard Brethern. I highly recommend this book

Yes, this is a history book, but it's so much more than that. Don Fitzkee writes with a style that makes the bare facts INTERESTING. While all the pertinent facts are contained here in detail, this is written by one who is obviously a great storyteller.Since "oral tradition" plays such a huge part in the history of religion in America as well as the current climate of most congregations not only in the Church of the Brethren, but in all other denominations as well, this book is a jewel.Every member of the Church of the Brethren should read it for sure, but those of other faith traditions will find it interesting and learn a great deal from the author's ability to tell the tale in such a way as well!Part of the message here is: Aren't we swell for recognizing the error of our ways so soon? But more than that, it's about how we can hurt one another along the way if we are not very careful and considerate and PRAYERFUL. Fitzkee doesn't take sides, but simply and beautifully tells the story of what happened so that we can all learn and learn well.

This well-researched and well-written book was a pleasant surprise for me. I was raised in the Church of the Brethren, but left it over 40 years ago. Now in reading this, I'm understanding and appreciating my heritage. The story of the Brethren, and the enormous changes they made in 100 years...the struggle to remain separate from the "world", yet to witness to the world...the questions of dress; of biblical interpretations; of love feasts and baptisms and church architecture...are well discussed and very interesting. I imagine all denominations have had to struggle with similar questions. I think this book would be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in Protestant church history. It is a MUST for all Church of the Brethren members!

I had watched many of his presentations on YouTube, but you can only get so much of his story out of that.The first half of the book gives a detailed background of his farm story and why he changed his farming management strategy.The second half of the book discusses his 5 principles of soil health with plenty of references to experts in the field and other farmers in the soil health realm.

This is an easy-to-read story and guide for anyone wanting to know more about organic gardening, both for consumers wanting to understand the benefit of buying organic fruits and vegetables at the grocerâ€™s, and for farmers interested in learning how to make a profit. Author Gabe Brown willingly shares his knowledge and tells the story of how he and his family weathered hard times before starting down the path to both healthy and sustainable crops, i.e., regenerative agriculture. But, as he likes to point out, his initial four years of financial disaster were what ultimately helped him to see the overall picture and start learning what would and would not work on a farm for him, his family, and his son who inherited his dadâ€™s love of farming.Brown learned from other farmers who were also experimenting and, like him, had â€˜learned the hard wayâ€™. He consulted scientists and specialists. He read voraciously. He didnâ€™t have any trouble raising cattle, but the dirt on his farm was unhealthy, had few worms, and there were plenty of other indicators that he needed to make a change from traditional farming methods. He ultimately learned to plant cover crops, saw that tilling dried out the soil, became adept at pasture management, realized the value of planting multiple species of forage crops similar to the varied plants living in harmony on the plains, and that fertilizing naturally instead of using synthetic was the way to go. Over time he stopped using herbicides and insecticides and found his fields were producing more and healthier foods. With his son, they expanded to additional animals, such as chickens and pigs, and to more diverse cultivation, such as fruit trees and bees. He explains, in laymanâ€™s terms, holistic management, bale grazing, and the value and roles of carbon and mycorrhizae. The color pictures in the center of the book tell the story as well.Ironically, when Brownâ€™s son attended college, he was surprised to see that his professors were still espousing traditional methods. Brown has realized he can play an active role in educating farmers interested in learning about a healthy ecosystem for a farm. He travels and gives presentations and his farm hosts internships yearly.

Allan nation once said most people only read one book after high school. That was me than 15 years ago I got into organic grass fed dairying. Now I read 12 to15 books per year. Gabe Brown wrote the best book I have ever read. He mentioned every person I follow and several of the books I have read. I have had a problem with mob grazing, especially with dairy farming. He convinces me it is a must do next Summer. I always thought he was a Joel Salatin copy cat maybe so but he is very good and he has convinced me I must own a no till drill and never, never till again. The neighbors think I am different now wait til they start drooling over rich black soil with nutrient dense crops.

So happy I pre-ordered this book. It was better than I expected. If you read this with an open mind and don't immediately start rethinking the way you farm, ranch, garden, or buy groceries, you need to read it again. In fact, you'll want to read it again anyway. It was that good!

Not finished with the book just yet, but this is a wonderful story of adversity turned to innovation. Yet, the innovation in this case is to go back in time to a day before our current farming method of "spray and pray". So refreshing to see a renewed intimacy and understanding with the soil and planning for generations of farm ownership rather than year-to-year perspective.

Gabe Brown has written an easy to read book that helps us realize what went wrong with modern farming and how to fix it by reconnecting with nature. The section on what went wrong with modern improved grain varieties and the resultant nutrient and health loss is stunning. The section on Farming Against Nature and the Trouble With Subsidies are outstanding. Gabe Brown lays out solutions including a different way of seeing what is happening to our soil, how to observe, how to make changes that transform chemically dead farm dirt into robust health giving soil, which is better for profits, our rivers, ecosystems and oceans and our health. I can't put this book down. it's that good.

The short review? A well-written portrait of a champion who somehow remains humble.The somewhat longer review? I really enjoyed reading Apolo's book. I have recommended it to my students at Clemson and to my family and friends. It is a great portrait of what it takes to become a champion and yet somehow stay amazingly humble. How does he do it? Did someone help him write this and help him keep it humble and well-written? I don't know. Either way, I would love to meet this young man and see for myself if he is truly a great champion both on the ice and in spirit. I particularly liked how Apolo handles the side-effects of short-track skating, meaning that almost anything can happen and he and the other athletes just have to deal with it. After all, there were many times in his skating career that he could have whined about how unfair everything was or complained about not getting the gold medal. But, he didn't. At least in the book, he sounds truly happy with what he has. I find that quite inspirational. I bought this book on my Kindle and will re-read it whenever I am feeling that life is over-whelming or unfair.

Love this book. It's so honest and well-written. Lots of information that the non-diehard athlete would never realize inhabits a winner's mind. I really admire Apolo's pure drive, and I hope he makes another Olympic appearance on the ice before he moves on. His dedication and perseverance have already translated into other things (winner of DWTS - love that show!), and I'm sure he will continue to shine...until the pizza craving kicks in again and he winds up a pudgy "chunk" on the couch in sweatpants and tube socks (and oily bandana) watching old skating tapes and living in the past. NOOOOoooo! I'm sure he won't let this happen. He's way to awesome, that Apolo with one "l". The Winter Olympics wouldn't be the same without him.

My nine-year old son insisted that we purchase the book after the author visited his school. He was captivated by the author's stories and presentation. I was worried whether the book, which is very factual and probably written more for grades 6-8, would hold a fourth grader's attention. It did! Kudos to the author.

I bought this book for my 92 year old father. He was in the Navy during WWII and his favorite pastime is reading. He thoroughly enjoyed the book and passed it on to my brother-in-law and now to my husband who was also in the Navy.

This came with a recommendation from Tom Wood's forum [...] as being a good book on Jefferson.Bernstein presents probably the fairest assessment of a person from the time period as I've seen. He doesn't ascribe deity or hero worship or perfection to the man. He also doesn't disparage Jefferson for being a product of his time and class and society. Bernstein presents Jefferson as a flawed individual who is not always consistent and doesn't always come out on top - also known as "a man".Bernstein takes a look at large periods of Jefferson's life and isn't writing to complete a minutia detailed account of every aspect of his life. However, the areas he does point to build up the man into who he would become, who he was, and how he ended life. Bernstein does reveal quite a bit that you don't learn about in history books or in school because Jefferson tends to be known for only one to two very large things - but he was so much more than those labels only. Bernstein also makes sure the reader understands some of the settings and places and even people surrounding Jefferson. Again, this is covered with a good amount of balance. Jefferson isn't the "man who could do no wrong". I did learn quite a bit about Jefferson, which should be one of the main goals when reading a biography. Bernstein does not shy away, either, of covering points of Jefferson's life like his contradictory position on slavery or his possibly fathering children from one of his slaves. Again, Bernstein, doesn't excuse it but he also doesn't call for readers of the current time to look back and denigrate those who don't hold the same values. Sadly, that's where mainstream conversations and populist books tend to go nowadays.Bernstein does a wonderful job at presenting Jefferson and his history. I highly recommend this book for those wanting to read about Jefferson or the era of the founding of America. I would have liked Bernstein to have gone a bit more into the political discussions Jefferson had with some areas of my own interest. Sometimes he tends to write as Jefferson on one side of the issue, someone else on the other, and here's the outcome. There are times that I wish the author would provide the reasons why Jefferson held to certain positions or had certain interests. However, I believe that may be the hindrance of history rather than the author. Final Grade - A

If you've put off reading a book about our "founding fathers" I would recommend R. B. Bernstein's, "Thomas Jefferson" as a great place to start. Bernstein's book provides a very good, though not detailed, examination of Jefferson's life, reflecting both the good and the bad. Should a reader of this book desire to read further into this period of American political life, Bernstein provides a very good list of references in his Notes and Bibliographical references.

This book is concise and easy to read, which is important to maintain the reader's interest. You'll learn many things about Jefferson that you didn't know, especially his nuanced feelings about slavery. What's most interesting is the often overlooked time Jefferson spent in Europe. Understanding this period of Jefferson's life is crucial to understanding his sympathy for the French Revolution, which was one of a couple of major points of contention between Jefferson and Hamilton. (By the way, the Jeffersonians and Hamiltonians were the first major political divide in America.)Bernstein achieves what is very difficult: withhold judgment on Jefferson and let the facts speak for themselves. After reading several books about the Founders, I've found that Jefferson is an idealist to a fault and much too faithful in the goodness of men. Also, his determination not to choose sides between the French and British was one of a series of mistakes made by Presidents Adams through Madison that left America open to attack from the British in 1812.My only complaint of this book is that the chapter on Jefferson's second term in office is rather brief. Besides that, it is pleasantly informative and balanced.

Not being a Thomas Jefferson (TJ) fan, I appreciated this book as a quick overview of his life, times, and most important decisions. It fairly identified TJ's shortcomings without diminishing his impact on American history or continued relevance today.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to TJ, though I only gave it four stars for the same reason I chose it: it's conciseness. The book's very brevity made it in some cases too concise. I feel like to even begin to have a working knowledge of TJ, I would need to read another book. What I have learned from this book is just enough to keep me from making major errors regarding his achievements and aims as a philosopher, scientist, partisan, and President.

In the main, this has been a great read. I've spent a couple of days going through the material and I like the rounded approach by the author. The material, so far - so good. I'm learning heaps of stuff. For that reason, I give the title five stars.However, I wish there was a separate category for the production quality of the digital content. There are "tips" and "notes" throughout that are clumsily positioned at the beginning of each that make it impossible to clearly understand what's being communicated. Learning to code is hard enough without having to do back-flips to decipher the information.

I've learned a lot of programming languages, techniques, and platforms over the years using books. There are great books, and there is... this. I am learning, but only because I'm tenacious enough to go outside this book. It tells you what to type in, but never takes the time to explain what you're doing - I never once found a reference to the fact that everything is defined in classes, and how those classes interact. (There are also mistakes in the example code that cause it not to work if you type it in exactly: make sure you download the code from the site; it's updated.) There's also a mistaken "business logic" assumption that he teaches in the first application - to determine whether or not you're submitting a zip code by looking to see if it's a number - when alpha characters appear in zip codes around the world. I know it's just an exercise, but that's not making me feel comfortable about someone's knowledge when they could have caught their faulty logic with one simple internet search. I've had great books - this guy seems to understand what he's doing, but he doesn't know how to transfer that knowledge effectively.

Great book for someone who is an experienced developer and wants to start learning Angular, and typescript.

Invaluable asset with lots of information otherwise tough to find at one place online. Easy to understand and practice. I am in to the fifth chapter and I could not be more excited to get the finish line. The fundmaentals and why something is used rather than just using for the sake of using it.

Similar to my critique of "Angular 6 by Example" (Chandermani Arora / Kevin Hennessy )No chapter or section exercises. If you don't include the usual cue's (section and chapter exercises) that it's time to shift from the book to the code, they might get 2, 3, or 4 chapters in and realize they aren't learning anything without grasping exactly why. It's because this methodology is trained by public education and for someone with an extended education, they've internalized this to the point where they don't think about it any more. In a nutshell, there are standards for education and reasons for them. What the author might consider is an approach that focuses on getting the student to MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and then following up with a companion problem / solution guide for common things new Angular developers experience. These will quickly wind up on Stack Overflow but by the same token you can use Stack Overflow to help to write the guide quickly and beat everyone else to market.I've not yet reviewed chapter page counts. IMHO this is important from the perspective of managing task size perception. Dietel, for example, can charge $150 because he writes like a text book author rather than a student writing a paper.

The thing that sets this book apart from other Angular books is the comprehensive advice on how to take an idea from the back of a napkin to deployment.The book starts with a chapter on how to configure your development environment and integrate build tools and project management tools. Next, Doguhan provides thoughts on how to best work with the business stakeholders to gain a high-level concept of the application's major functions and turn that into a simple set of interactive wireframes. From there, you build a simple local weather app to cover the Angular basics.Switching gears into a well-defined line-of-business app project, you are shown how to build the walking skeleton of the new application utilizing the powerful Angular Router. This critical step gives you something to put in front of the stakeholders almost immediately. Not only is this very quick business value, but gives you an opportunity to iron out any large architecture-level issues before they become too difficult to manage.After the walking skeleton, several Angular concepts are covered in-depth as you work on features for the Lemon Mart app. This larger app provides an opportunity to talk about best practices, useful design patterns and potential pitfalls. The last chapters cover how to easily deploy the app to Amazon's cloud using Docker, and how to tie into Google Analytics to give your stakeholders feedback on site performance and user activity.So, yeah, you'll learn Angular.You'll also learn so much more that you can use on all of your future web-app efforts, regardless of whether or not you use Angular.

I was surprised by the comprehensiveness of this book. I got the book because I'm new to Angular 2+ and the earlier chapters do a good job of on-boarding with Angular with step-by-step instructions. Learning about Docker and AWS along the way was cool bonus.There's a mix of practical and background info presented along the way, which kept me interested, so i ended up going thru the majority of the chapters. Some of the later chapters are more challenging, so I can see more junior developers struggling with them. Some of the dev environment suggestions are super opinionated, I guess it's good for beginners but I mostly skipped over that stuff.Overall a good resource, could use some minor improvements to formatting and flow of content. It'd be great to have an electronic version without page breaks.

I spend thousands of dollars on Amazon purchases and NEVER review products, but this book was so bad, I had to share why.First of all, it's written in Comic Sans font. Big red flag. Next, there is absolutely zero flow when it comes to the rhythm of the words. There is no story either. It's like the authors started with a list of construction equipment and dedicated one or two sentences to each one and strung them together to form a book.It would have made even some sense if the book referenced a single construction project where each machine had a job to do and the work began in the morning and ended at night.This book does no such thing. Also the only reference to night or bedtime is on the last page which mentions the words "Good night".I'm so mad I bought this book. I literally want to throw it away.

This book is AWFUL. We'd bought it hoping it would be in the same realm as "good night good night construction site" and it couldn't be further from it. This is just a random trucks book that happens to say goodnight to one truck at the end of it. Not a bedtime book, nothing language promoting here (with rhyming language). There are dozens of better truck books out there, I wouldn't waste your money.

I bought this book then returned it. While it is quite a nice book regarding trucks, it is not really a "good night" book. There is barely a transition at all to "bed time" which is what a good night book needs to be. I love books that help children move from daytime/playtime to night time/bedtime. This one missed the mark for that purpose but still a book worthy to buy if you have an avid truck lover toddler.

This book SUCKS!!! It doesn't rhyme at all (which is necessary to help little ones with language development). I think I'm going to give it to Goodwill.

Had I realized it's from the same awful series as "Good Night America" I would not have bought it. The writing is horrible. Two year old likes the pictures so it gets two stars.

Too many big words for toddlers, I don't even know what half the kinds of trucks are... Not a cute bed time story like I imagined it would be. My son never wants me to read this to him

My grandson lives cars and trucks so he enjoys it when we read this to him. Pictures are vivid so that's also a plus!

My 2 year old, who is obsessed with trucks, loves this book. He asks to read it just about every night before bed. It's a quick read compared to good night, good night construction site (which he also loves)
