It is setup like a diary, though unlike Recovery Road it has pictures, and each would be chapter is short. However, with a movie coming up this August, starring Amandla Stenberg and Anika Noni Rose, you know I couldnâ€™t resist. Though, let me tell you, this is by no means the best YA novel Iâ€™ve ever read.Characters & StorylineSince she was a baby, Madeline hasnâ€™t left her house. Her mother, a doctor, has diagnosed her with SCIDs (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) after her getting gravely ill as a baby. What this basically does is turn her into a bubble child (Think Jake Gyllenhaalâ€™s Bubby Boy). Which, if you saw the movie, youâ€™ll remember means a lot of remodeling of the family home in order to accommodate the disease. So, with some money Maddyâ€™s mom came into, she is able to redo the house to keep Maddy healthy.Thus leading to, for more than 15 some odd years, the only people Maddy interacting with being her mom and nurse Carla. However, then comes Olly, a boy who moves in next door. His curiosity, his being new to the area, draws him to the cute girl who just watches people from the window. So, thanks to a bit of perseverance, and Maddyâ€™s own curiosity, they become friends and so blooms the desire to become something more. But is that possible when Maddy canâ€™t do things normal girls do? Will Olly, considering his family situation, as well as the ability to meet tons of girls at school, really give him the time to deal with the frustration which is having to adjust his life to meet the requirements of what he needs to do just to see Maddy? All of it, truly, reminds you of what it was like to be young and have a full-fledged, it could happen, type of crush. The kind you dream about and so much more.Itâ€™s Not Too Heavy or SensationalizedI think Iâ€™m not alone in saying that the YA novel genre has become saturated with drug addiction, accidental deaths, various kinds of abuse, and with that it makes books which donâ€™t include that seem tame. Heck, they seem boring in comparison. For, after all, books are about escapism, going into someone elseâ€™s world, usually more interesting than yours, and getting away. Yet, at the same time, books are also about finding someone, or something, to relate to, despite your difference.Maddyâ€™s life is bare. She has her mom, Carla, and a computer she strangely only does school work on. Even when Olly enters her life, there is nothing sensationalized about their relationship. He isnâ€™t some bad boy she is trying to save nor is he just some curious dude who is bored.In a lot of ways, Everything, Everything reminds you that storytelling, and coming of age, isnâ€™t just about having sex for the first time, your first drink, your first smoke, or what often are considered things that adults do. Itâ€™s about experiencing life with the only influence your parents having is how they live by example and you deciding what to, or not to, take from that. Which includes how you handle being offered sex, drugs, and etc., as well as how you handle tragedy, how you are as a friend or partner when that other person is hurting and more.Overall: Mixed (Borrow)While I really have nothing but praise for Everything, Everything here is the thing. Itâ€™s not for everyone. This book isnâ€™t about escapism but providing perhaps a character to relate to. Hence why Maddy is Black and Asian, just like Nicola Yoonâ€™s children will be. This book, in a way, is about breaking the mold, not giving in to the need for sudden shocks and the usual beliefs of what teens get themselves, and each other, into. This book is for those who may have issues with their parents, maybe never been kissed, but nonetheless are completely normal. With that, as much as the book has quotable lines up the ying yang, it doesnâ€™t really bring me to say you should buy it nor can I strongly recommend it. Itâ€™s a quick read which wonâ€™t be taxing on your time and emotions but with it just being cute, even with Maddyâ€™s diagnosis, it doesnâ€™t come up with ways to make you wanna read this over and over again. As much as we get to know Maddy and Olly, as well as their friends and family, they donâ€™t leave a strong impression for they are so normal that, minus or plus one or two things, you probably already know someone like them.Hence the Mixed (Borrow) label for while those prepping for the movie I think may enjoy the insight, and surely will look forward to certain moments in the movie, I think on its own Everything, Everything may do things differently, but not in such a way it becomes exemplary.

I have read many books in my 23 years of life. And I am those type of people who fall head over heels in love with certain books. This is one of them. The writing is beautiful, you fall in love with the characters in this book and honestly, I just could not put this book down. Throughout my day I could not wait until I reunited with this story,You have to read this book, it will definitely change the way you see and appreciate things.

I will be honest, I read this book start to finish in one day. There were parts where I just couldnâ€™t stop reading because I wanted to know what would happen. I really enjoyed reading the storyline and getting to know Olly and Maddy. I definitely wish that when I was 18 years old I knew a boy like Olly! Although I have to say that is one criticism that I have of this book, I donâ€™t believe that boyâ€™s like Olly actually exist at the age of 18 years old! He was so sweet, thoughtful, sure of himself and his love for Maddy, and very mature. So I struggled to read the book and relate to a world in which a character like Olly would exist.Other than that I loved the storyline and the authorâ€™s writing. Maddy was funny and quirky and relatable. I did wonder which direction the story would go, I wouldnâ€™t say it was predictable, but I wasnâ€™t sure whether it would have a happy or sad ending. There seemed to be only two ways for the book to end. And I will say that when I read the last part of the book I was actually disappointed there wasnâ€™t more to the story of Olly and Maddy. I was left wanting more!Definitely worth reading if you like sweet YA love stories.

I ate this book up. Iâ€™m not sure how I can describe how great this book was for me. I definitely wasnâ€™t expecting on reading it in a day. It was that good.Maddy was an amazing main character. I love her positive outlook on life, despite her illness and the fact that sheâ€™s never been outside of her house. Sheâ€™s so smart and witty. One of my favorite things that she does is every time she gets a new book, she writes a list of rewards if found. My favorite: Snorkel with me (Madeline) off Molokini to spot the Hawaiian state fish â€” the humuhumunukunukuapuaa.I enjoyed her relationship with all of the characters. I really enjoyed it and at times wish I had an Olly. ðŸ˜‰Though I am clearly a huge fan of Olly, my favorite character relationship was Maddy and Carla, her nurse. Carla seemed more of a mother figure to Maddy to me than Maddyâ€™s own mother. She understands that Maddy is an eighteen-year old girl who wants to do things that other people her age are doing. Some of my favorite parts of the novel were their scenes together. She was such a wonderful contribution to the novel.The only issue that I have with this book is the last third of it felt extremely rushed. I wouldnâ€™t have mind having the book be 50 or so pages longer so the finale could develop and play out more. Though I figured out the ending half way through reading, I still would have liked to see more.With that said, I still very much enjoyed it. Yoonâ€™s writing is so beautiful and intoxicating. She knows how to suck you into a story and never want to leave. I canâ€™t wait to get my hands on her next novel.

I finally stopped leeching off the various online resources (d20PFSRD, Archives of Nethys, etc.) and bought myself a copy of the CRB. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality. The binding is the best I have seen for any book in my collection -- not just RPG books, I mean ALL my books. I felt like I was flipping pages from a beloved and well-worn tome I had owned for years. Of course, the print quality is top notch, and the information within is exhaustive and organized in a naturally intuitive manner. This, I think, will be the first of many Pathfinder volumes to be added to my shelf.

I thought I'd post specifically on the quality of the book's construction, because it was a bit of a gamble when I bought it for myself due to lack of info:The Pathfinder Core Rulebook as well as the Pathfinder Bestiary, hardcover editions, have sewn bindings. Why is this important? It means the books will still be intact after years of use. In short, if you're in to Pathfinder, the hardcover Pathfinder series seems to be a good investment in terms of longevity.Regarding the book's contents:In theory, any player's handbook contains enough information for both players and GM, simply because it lays out the core mechanics necessary for the players to interact with the game world - Fleshing out the world and interactions is up to the GM. In other words, you don't need a monster manual, a spell manual, a specific GM guide, a campaign setting, etc. - just the core handbook.However, those accessory books are helpful in giving you starting points as you try to bring your world to life - pre-made creatures and spells that have been play-tested and balanced to work well within the rule system. If players or GM are uncomfortable with bending rules as a method for balancing gameplay or with creating new monsters/spells/items/etc., these accessory books become essential...and the game becomes very expensive, too.The Pathfinder Core Rulebook offers plenty of info on race, class, items, skills, spells, and even devotes a decent chunk specifically to game-mastery. The only thing it really lacks is monsters and monster creation, so I would recommend purchasing the Pathfinder Bestiary I if you've purchased the Core Rulebook and decided you like the system. Bestiary I includes many, many, monsters as well as info on creating your own.Basically, the Core Rulebook gives you the structure of the rule system and enough info to get the ball rolling, and then it guides you in using your own imagination to build on that system...if you're comfortable designing your own creatures without a specific guide to do so.So...to come up with your own stuff, or to rely on accessory material? The cost of additional books aside, this is essentially a question of confidence and competence. If the players are willing to trust the GM to bend rules as necessary to balance customized gameplay AND the GM is competent enough to do it, there is no problem. But many players feel it is essential to rely on pre-made material that has been play-tested, and that's where the other books come in (along with endless arguments over little details). Thankfully, with Pathfinder you need only the Core Rulebook and Bestiary I for a basically fully-defined, 90% fudge-free campaign. If you're willing to fudge as necessary, all you need is the Core Rulebook.If you're new to tabletop RPGs, expect some rule-bending or you'll get so bogged down that it will lose its fun. If you're a new GM, expect to HAVE to bend rules once in a while because no matter how many accessory books you purchase you're going to run into situations that aren't adequately covered by existing material.The #1 thing to keep in mind: The Core Rulebook is a GUIDEbook. It's ok to modify the rules - nobody's going to get hurt. Hopefully.

I am VERY VERY new to RPG pen and paper style games. I barely got into it maybe a year ago. I recently started reading different games. So I am not even an amateur yet. This particular game seems extremely similar to D&D. As a newbie I can barely tell the difference. I have had it explained to me and it makes sense but without the explanation I wouldn't have noticed. With that said I do enjoy this book greatly and even bought a race guide with it. If you are super amateur like myself this may appear to be the same as D&D... if you are a more seasoned player you will probably get more out of this. Either way... fun read

After getting the Beginner's Box, we were all hyped up for more. We're ready to try some new adventures and campaign settings, as well as have more in depth characters! This will be a short review, but a positive one. This book is like a D20 Player's Handbook on steroids. I loved the D20 system, consider it the pinnacle of gaming rules (and I've been at it since Chainmail...), and I was saddened by the horrible edition of D&D that replaced it. This goes back to the basic D20 rules, gives you the classes, the spells, the feats, the skills, the items, all you need to kick off a campaign. I say it is the PHB on steroids because it also includes many of the rules that you'd find in a DMG as well. All that's missing is monsters. If you want a great fantasy game, want to suppliment your D20 stuff, or just want to replace the D20 without buying decade old used books, Pathfinder is the way to go. Great art, great rules, well written, sturdy book (though the pages are a bit thin and don't seem like they will wear well).

In recent years, information warfare has captured the attention--and imagination--of government officials, information security specialists, and curious onlookers. The term is used to cover a broad spectrum of activity but especially a scenario wherein information terrorists, using not much more than a keyboard and mouse, hack into a computer and cause planes to crash, unprecedented power blackouts to occur, or food supplies to be poisoned. The terrorists might tamper with computers that support banking and finance, perhaps causing stock markets to crash or economies to collapse. None of these disasters has occurred, but the concern is that they, and others like them, could happen, given the ease with which teenagers have been able to romp through computers with impunity--even those operated by the U.S. Department of Defense. This book is an introduction to information warfare. It is about operations that target or exploit information media in order to win some objective over an adversary. It covers a wide range of activity, including computer break-ins and sabotage, espionage and intelligence operations, telecommunications eavesdropping and fraud, perception management, and electronic warfare. The book is about teenagers who use the Internet as a giant playground for hacking, competitors who steal trade secrets, law enforcement agencies who use information warfare to fight crime and terrorism, and military officers who bring information warfare to the battleground. It is about information-based threats to nations, to business, and to individuals--and countermeasures to these threats. It spans several areas, including crime, terrorism, national security, individual rights, and information security. The objectives of the book are fourfold. The first is to present a comprehensive and coherent treatment of offensive and defensive information warfare in terms of actors, targets, methods, technologies, outcomes, policies, and laws. Information warfare can target or exploit any type of information medium--physical environments, print and storage media, broadcast media, telecommunications, and computers and computer networks. All of these are treated within the book, albeit with a somewhat greater emphasis on computer media. The second objective is to present a theory of information warfare that explains and integrates operations involving this diverse collection of actors and media within a single framework. The theory is centered on the value of information resources and on "win-lose" operations that affect that value. The third is to separate fact from fiction. The book attempts to present an accurate picture of the threat, emphasizing actual incidents and statistics over speculation about what could happen. Speculation is not ignored, however, as it is essential for anticipating the future and preparing for possible attacks. A fourth objective is to describe information warfare technologies and their limitations, particularly the limits of defensive technologies. There is no silver bullet against information warfare attacks. The book is not a "how to," with regard to either launching an attack or defending against one. Nevertheless, because the book provides a reasonably comprehensive treatment of the methods and technologies of information warfare, it may be useful for making informed judgments about potential threats and defenses. The book is intended for a broad audience, from the student and layperson interested in learning more about the domain and what can be done to protect information assets, to the policy maker who wishes to understand the nature of the threat and the technologies and issues, to the information security specialist who desires extensive knowledge about all types of attacks and countermeasures in order to protect organizational assets. It was also written for an international audience. Although the focus is on activity within the United States, activity outside the United States is included. The book is used in an information warfare course I teach at Georgetown University for graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The students in the course come from a wide range of disciplines--international politics, national security studies, science and technology in international affairs, communications, culture and technology, business, finance, government, the sciences, and the humanities. The book is divided into three parts. Part I introduces the concepts and principles of information warfare. There are three chapters. Chapter 1, Gulf War--Infowar, begins with examples of information warfare taken from the time of the Persian Gulf War and the continuing conflict with Iraq. It summarizes the principles of information warfare and discusses trends in technology and information warfare. Chapter 2, A Theory of Information Warfare, presents a model of information warfare in terms of four main elements: information resources, players, offensive operations, and defensive operations. It relates information warfare to information security and information assurance. Chapter 3, Playgrounds to Battlegrounds, situates information warfare within four domains of human activity: play, crime, individual rights, and national security. It summarizes some of the activity in each of the areas. Part II covers offensive information warfare operations. It is organized around media and methodologies and gives numerous examples of incidents in each category. There are eight chapters. Chapter 4, Open Sources, is about media that are generally available to everyone, including Internet Web sites. It covers open source and competitive intelligence, invasions of privacy, and acts of piracy that infringe on copyrights and trademarks. Chapter 5, Psyops and Perception Management, is about operations that exploit information media, particularly broadcast media and the Internet, in order to influence perceptions and actions. Chapter 6, Inside the Fence, is about operations against an organization's resources by insiders and others who get inside access. It covers traitors and moles, business relationships, visits and requests, insider fraud, embezzlement and sabotage, and physical break-ins. Chapter 7, Seizing the Signals, is about operations that intercept communications and use sensors to collect information from the physical environment. Telecommunications fraud and physical and electronic attacks that disrupt or disable communications are also covered. Chapter 8, Computer Break-Ins and Hacking, is about computer intrusions and remote attacks over networks. It describes how intruders get access and what they do when they get it. Chapter 9, Masquerade, is about imposters who hide behind a facade. It covers identity theft, forgeries, and Trojan horses. Finally, Chapter 10, Cyberplagues, is about computer viruses and worms. Part III covers defensive information warfare, including strengths and limitations of particular methods. It has five chapters. Chapter 11, Secret Codes and Hideaways, is about methods that conceal secrets, including cryptography (encryption), steganography, anonymity, and locks and keys. Chapter 12, How to Tell a Fake, is about methods of determining whether information is trustworthy and genuine. It covers biometrics, passwords, integrity checksums, digital signatures, watermarking, and badges and cards. Chapter 13, Monitors and Gatekeepers, is about monitors that control access to information resources, filter information, and detect intrusions into information systems or misuse of resources. Chapter 14, In a Risky World, is about what organizations can do to deal with risk. It includes vulnerability monitoring and assessment, building and operating secure systems, risk management, and incident handling. Finally, Chapter 15, Defending the Nation, is about the role of the government in defensive information warfare. Three areas are covered: generally accepted system security principles, protecting critical infrastructures, and encryption policy. Throughout these chapters, the book describes numerous incidents, companies, and products. These are provided to illustrate concepts and methods. I do not endorse any of the companies or products mentioned. I have tried to report all information fairly and accurately and welcome corrections. Writing this book has posed several challenges. One was deciding what to include within the scope of information warfare. Whereas practically everyone would agree that breaking into Department of Defense computers is information warfare, at least under certain conditions, not everyone would agree that many of the topics covered in this book are information warfare. In the end, I decided to take a broad perspective, as there were common principles underlying these disparate activities. Moreover, I was fascinated by these areas, saw a connection, and so decided to include them. No doubt, some people will say that I swept up too much--that information warfare pertains more to national-level threats and not to activity such as fraud and piracy. That is a fair criticism. The book provides a good overview of information warfare. It is divided into three sections, the introduction, offensive information warfare and finally defensive information warfare. Numerous topics are covered. The author is clearly an expert in security and manages to touch upon all the major information security topics.The main strength of the book is the breadth of topic selection. By the time you have reached the end of the book, you will have at least a passing acquaintance with all important information security topics. The book is very well referenced and is written in an easy to read style.The enormous topic selection means that no topic is treated in any particular depth. This means that you'll get to know something about everything, but unfortunately you won't develop an intimate understanding of any of the topics covered.At times I received the impression that the book was simply a collection of anecdotes. Some parts of the book resembled sensationalistic journalism and, four years after it was written, many parts of the book are out of date. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a broad overview of information security. Its scatter gun approach means that you'll hit all of the topics but won't develop a true understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved.

Dorothy Denning's book covers almost every aspect of a topic that is of increasing importance. It is written in an ENJOYABLE STYLE and is full of examples, stories and quotations that WELL ILLUSTRATE the points she wants to make. It is an EXCELLENT OVERVIEW of the topic, and for those who are interested in the details, an extensive list of references is included at the end.Whether you are responsible for information security at your enterprise or you are a citizen concerned about your data's privacy, you WILL NOT REGRET if you read this book.However, it could be improved in several areas:Even in an overview like this, more should be said about the controls that can help you protect your data (such as separation of duties, security audits etc.). The numbering of references is restarted in every chapter and so they are hard to find at the end of the book. Most importantly, it should show much less political and cultural bias. A book that is basically about information-related threats and defenses is NOT supposed to be used to protect Attorney General Janet Reno in connection with the Waco case (see Chapter 5) or vent the author's dislike of the Arab countries. For example, if Arab governments control information such as pornography, it is called "censorship", the same thing done by the US government is referred to as "restrictions - also in Chapter 5. (Don't get me wrong: it is NO accident that I lived in the US for years and never ever wished to live in an Arab country, so I am myself biased toward American culture. Even so, I often found Denning too openly manipulative.)

The author uses this book as a reference for her class at university training, and you can see this in the documentation and bibliography that is at the end of the book, each single fact, issue and thing explained is documented with references. No "hearsay" documentation or unverifiable "factoids" but a true, full and comprehensive documentation about all the aspect of security. And this is the second strong point of this book, the fact that cover ALL concerns security, not only computer related issues. Couple this two very good things with a very good writing style and a very readable matters and what you have is maybe one of the best book about security that money can buy. If you are searching a book about specific matters (i.e. Cryptography) this book is not for you (too generic) but if you need a definitive resource for all the aspects of security this book is for you.Only problem is that, after reading it, you can become a little paranoid...

This is turning out to be my best book for the last year among many books, including my personal study on the subject of trust.It is also one of the slowest reading. That is not a complaint. Rather, the pages are full of ideas and concepts that can't just be simply read. I must take the time to grasp the concept, taking me off into many new areas in depth.One of the most critical elements described is the lack of accountability in the digital environment. News provided based on user demographics, (a new kind of censorship) biased algorithms (innocent or not so innocent), and the claim of "platform" (Facebook) rather than actual accountability for content or resultant activities (Uber) gives new meaning to caveat emptor in a digital environment.A second critical element is the source of information or "truth" from one's tribe of similar thinkers. The diversity of thinking increases, yet creating more tribes of similar thinkers, less within the overall community that must live and work together.A great book, an author worth following.

Absolutely essential reading for anyone living or working in the virtual age. From learning about the technology underlying cryto-currencies to discovering what is so disruptive about some of the newest and most powerful business models, Who Can You Trust, comes back to the essential questions again and again - who can you trust, how do we determine the answer to that question, and in an ever more automated world, are we allowed to take some time before clicking, opting in, and joining up? I would have loved the author to spend more time on her proposal of building in a "trust pause" to automated processes, but even pointing out that critical thinking should never be jettisoned, especially in the most seamless transactions is incredibly valuable.

If just for the skill with which the author quantifies and details a concept as abstract as "trust," this book would be very worthwhile. But an added bonus is the way in which the explosive role of digital technologies is shown to be dramatically reshaping the nature of interactions between individuals, in addition to interactions between the individual citizen and the political and commercial institutions that collectively constitute the society and culture. I suspect even a well informed, astute observer might not realize just how quickly and dramatically these relationships are evolving around and amidst us; this book is a big help in bringing this astonishing revolution and transition in to sharper focus.

As a comparative political scientist, I have to interested in trust, and I have to be worried about the decline in what Rachel Botsman call institutional trust in countries around the world including the one I live in and the one(s) she lives in.To my delight, Botsman unpacks what trust in general means more than most of my fellow political scientists in at least two ways. First, she talks about "trust stacks" in which we start by trusting an idea, than the platform it is built on, and finally in other people you might (or might not) trust. Second, she talks about "trust leaps" or the fact that trust almost always involves taking a metaphorical leap into the unknown which is one of the main reasons why Palestinians have a hard time trusting Israelis (and vice versa) or why President Reagan is famous for the line, "trust, but verify.Even more to my delight, Botsman talks about what she calls distributed trust which she thinks is the hallmark of the digital age. No longer do we have to worry only about the the institutional trust that is in decline around the world. Now, we are learning how to replace it with trust achieved a) through platforms that b) are not centrally controlled like those institutions, and c) have a lot of Regan's verification built into them.As she says, we have a lot to learn about these mechanisms, but they are well worth thinking about.

This book is tremendously valuable in simply the indexing of Botsmanâ€™s sources. Wow! Add to that a well-told story of the nature of trust and how it has changed as society and its technologies have changed and you have this thought leading, and thought provoking masterwork. While very well researched it is not an â€œacademicâ€ piece but a moving read, full of excellent examples told as stories that is well suited to both experts and the curious. It will be on the Required Reading List for my business unit, and Iâ€™ll highly recommend it outside of my circle, particularly when people ask me, â€œSo what exactly is it you do for a living?â€

Very provocative with excellent stories to illustrate key points.

This is an interesting subject. An excellent analysis on how we have evolved in the trust equation.That is a very broad â€œweâ€!Personally, I donâ€™t think that I have evolved much....even into institutional trust!Read it !

Mandatory for establishing trust in the face of a rapidly growing industry of distrust by government, commerce, religion.
