Nice book. There are only a few recipes I like but it's worth it for those This was the best of the three books I had gotten from the library.

This spiralizer cookbook is better than all the others combined. Wish I'd bought it first!

Some of the recipe are not what my family would eat! But the ones I tried were very good and easy to follow.

Love the book. Has great recipes.

Gives me an idea of what veges can be done this way. However I wouldn't use many recipes in the book

Beautiful pictures of each recipe and many good recipes in this book.

Not worth Time or money

This is a must read for anyone wanting to get into meditation. It covers almost every conceivable form of meditation. Will help a reader decide what form of meditation is right for them to pursue.

Wonderful book! Very good extracts of the main chinese paths to Realization!I would suggest reading William Bodri's book in addition for a whole view of the process. In fact, these texts are gems by themselves. But honestly, to understand how their related practices must be practice gradually, Bodri's help is really a good hand!Good lecture!

The chapter on Chan meditation was very helpful !! Read it if you are flirting with Zen. Charles Luk has done us a great service.

I really like this book because it was composed at a high level of enlightenment. It's not about how to reach clarity. It's about how 6 traditions rech that state. I tend to pay attention to Zen, Taoism, and American Indian traditions more than any others, and this book has pretty good workings in Tao and Zen. I would no more tell you to follow one path as I would tell you how to taste your food or kiss a woman.

A very good book for increase my spirituality and give peace and balance to my mind. This book reveals an interesting view of meditation.

As a novice, I found this book troublesome. While the information is very interesting for my Buddhist study, it offered me little practical help in my meditation practices. I do enjoy the text for its readings and explanations of the various schools of Buddhist thought. But I have found better texts and more helpful texts when it comes to instruction on personal meditation.

I like it but there are much theory and lose in it. It is difficult to understand because so criptic language and alegory in old china.

This book really nails a lot of the problem areas seen in other litRPG books. It sets good real world stakes for a believable protagonist, sets a good reason for the characters unique class, and good in game set up for side character motivations. The book quickly takes you into the game and sets up the motivation. The pacing in this book is really well done and makes it so you don't want to put it down. In most litRPGs its hard to find a way to convincingly level the main protagonist and the unique class really creates an interesting way to do this. The one issue I had with this book is thats its a bit predictable at points. This happened a few times and didn't detract from the story too much but is worth mentioning. I also really appreciated how the cute girl he meets online keeps their relationship platonic throughtout the book.Overall I would recommend this to anyone who likes the litRPG genre or who is interested in checking it out.

I received an ARC from Portal Books in exchange for an honest review. The pros:Occultist is written in a light, pleasant style, which is entertaining and easy to get through. The characters are relatable and sympathetic, even if they occasionally make choices that make me look at them a little funny.Fight scenes are smooth and progress nicely, and the story has very little that feels like fluff or filler. I especially loved the humor of the scenes, and found the sarcasm very well executed. The other real strength that I found in this book was that, despite being a LitRPG, it balanced the genres well and didn't forego a story for game mechanics. I'm not the sort who really loves heavy, drawn-out sequences of stat boxes, and despite that, the story was able to be coherent and enjoyable for me.The cons:I felt that there were issues in tone with this book, with different sections feeling like they were written for wildly different audiences. I could never quite get my feet under me with that. The world was lovingly created, but at the same time, there wasn't enough support given to its dystopian nature. Characters would behave in ways that seemed very unusual/unreasonable/unrealistic, with the justification just sort of lumped together under the umbrella of "the world is hard", and it didn't feel convincing to me.Fight scenes flowed well, yes, and I found them pleasant enough to read, but they never made me feel like the main character was in danger. He cut his way through enemies with ease, which left the fight scenes feeling distant and disconnected to me.My greatest issue with Occultist was that key moments in the story felt rather contrived. Things would progress reasonably, and then when the plot needed to progress something implausible or impractical would happen, like the main character being afraid to do a google search for his invalid mother for fear of being tracked yet being totally comfortable using her credit card to buy stuff (only realizing his mistake later for dramatic effect). The central concept of the book was the greatest offender of this for me - I didn't find the scenario of the main character winding up stranded in a dungeon and finding a hidden class trainer to be believable/reasonable.Final thoughts:Despite what I've said, I truly did find Occultist an enjoyable read. It wasn't a struggle to get through, and I found myself laughing out loud in places. I think it has its points which can be improved upon, but it's really strong, especially in the LitRPG genre. I would happily read something else by this author, and I wish him the best of luck with this release.

The book as a whole was a very good read with a nice balance of in game action and real world action! There were a few mechanics that didn't seem to work correctly but over all a good read!

I recommend this book, it was a very enjoyable read, I liked the characters and had a good amount of action.

Couldn't put it down. Spent 6 hours reading it before I realized what time it was, and then wanted to re-read it. Can't wait for the next book! Perfect amount of LITRPG, no 15 pages of tables every chapter, no harem, just pure entertainment.

I thoroughly enjoyed the read, it wasn’t quite what I’d expected when I picked it up, but it certainly wrapped me in.

a good read

Good character and world building. A new and unique spin on a story thats been told before. Loved the character build and choice of class and skills. Hope to see more not only from author but more in this series.

White Witch, Black Curse (The Hollows, Book 7), by Kim Harrison

From Publishers Weekly

Confusion reigns for characters and readers in the complicated seventh urban fantasy outing (after 2008's The Outlaw Demon Wails) for witch detective Rachel Morgan. Rachel's reputation is in tatters—to save humanity, she used powers that are considered evil—and she's still devastated by the mysterious death of her boyfriend six months earlier. Her attempts to solve his murder bleed into a case involving an emotion-sucking banshee, and soon Rachel has to bring in her PI partners—Ivy, a bisexual vampire, and Jenks, a pixie in existential crisis—along with empathic psychiatrist Ford and the banshee victim's father, Federal Inderland Bureau captain Edden. Harrison's unique vampire mythology unduly complicates world-building, and newcomers will be desperate for a glossary, but the nearly nonstop action nicely plays off the poignancy of Rachel's difficult life. From Booklist

Hell hath no fury like witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan when it comes to avenging her lover’s murder. Her quest for justice holds some significant realizations for her, too, such as the strength in her bond with vamp partner Ivy, who helps her withstand the waves of power coursing through her body in one of the book’s most emotionally gripping scenes. Through a welter of vampires, demons, pixies, and witches, Harrison conducts readers on a suspenseful, satisfying journey of payback, personal growth, and empowerment while setting the scene for Rachel’s new romance, which will probably commence in the next of this spellbinding series. --Whitney Scott

What do you get when an elf, a witch, a ghost , a pixie and a demon get on an elevator together(Harrison)? You get Book 7 in Kim Harrison's Hollows series-White Witch, Black Curse. It is another fabulous romp through the magical chaotic life of Rachel Morgan. To quote Jenks "Tink's Panties" this book is so good. What I loved most about this book is how Rachel is growing up and coming into her own as a witch and a person as the series evolves. Rachel tries to stop and think about her actions and how they may effect others instead of just acting on the thrill now. Don't get me wrong trouble still finds Rachel, like a moth to a flame, and in White Witch trouble has found her in the form of a banshee. Mia is a banshee who thinks she is above the law and it is up to Rachel and the gang to show her differently. Meanwhile, a ghost Rachel summoned when she was 18 is haunting the church. Al shows up and claims Pierce the ghost as his new familiar and snatches him down to the Ever After. Now not only does she have the banshee to deal with: now Rachel must find a way to convince Al that taking her friends against their will to the Ever After is not going to fly with her.So I have to say my favorite scene in the book is at the New Year's Eve party and most of the men in Rachel's life converge into one elevator for one very awkward, very funny ride down. Al and Pierce had me cracking up. On that note I actually love the added element of a new potential love interest for Rachel in the form of "Rachel Candy", Pierce the ghost. But then again I have always had a soft spot for the sexy devil may care types especially ones with an accent. So while I like Pierce, I think I am still holding out for a Rachel and Trent love connection and maybe it will happen at the end of the series. A girl can always hope, right? My only compliant about this book is that at the very end Rachel remembers all the details of Kisten's death. For me the wrap up of Kisten's death, after waiting one whole book to find out all the gory details, felt anticlimactic. I know some people will disagree but it felt almost like an after thought after spending the whole book on other problems there was only twenty minutes on Kisten's murder and figuring out who the murderers where and bam it was over and sealed up.The only thing I can say about the narration is thank god Marguerite Gavin is back. I love how she brings life to my favorite characters, especially Jenks. In conclusion, I give White Witch, Black Curse four solid laser pistols. I highly recommend this series if only to find out what colorful swears will come out of Jenks' mouth next.

I have enjoyed reading this series sooooo much! I’ve grown so attached to the characters and have even adopted Jenks’ Tink remarks as my own! My friend Linda recommended the series to me and I will recommend it to my husband. It’s such a wonderful fun, world to be in. Maybe I’m an easy target but many times I don’t see the twists and turns coming. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the mystical world of Witches, Weres, Vampires, Banshees, Elves, Fairies and Pixies! But what a fun series to be introduced to this Genre via the mystery, the drama and puzzles of Cincinnati!

White Witch Black Curse - the title really does say it all! Rachel is doing all the wrong things for all the right reasons, and I love how she is justifying her actions to herself. I also think that the more she does things she thought she'd never do, the stronger her moral compass gets, and that's part of the awesomeness that is The Hollows! There also is a new supernatural creature in White Witch Black Curse, and the way she is weaved into the story and the plot of this installment is really good! On top of that, she fits into the overall plot as well, and I realized this because of something that happened in Dead Witch Walking. I think this is part of why I love this series so much, it shines true in each book that the author is on top of her story, her plot-lines and her characters, and it's always like looking at one of those Salvador Dali paintings, where at first you see one thing, then, when you look a little closer you see something else.So yeah, I hope it's OK to compare a book to a painting, because I didn't have the exact words I needed to explain this whole immediate, intermediate and long-term plot-lines the way I wanted to. Anyway, back to White Witch Black Curse, Rachel actually has more than the usual drama to deal with, as some family secrets come to light in a pretty bad way, and she is upset with both her mom and her brother because they have both kept her in the dark.As you can imagine, with the loose threads from prior books, a new character, a difficult murder investigation and Rachel's shunning, White Witch Black Curse is certainly fast-paced. But never so much that I felt out of breath - even when Rachel was. And I was very happy with the new reveals, as well as the way Rachel handled everything that arrived on her plate, on her doorstep, in her mail-box and everywhere else stuff could just show up like that. The fact that all the characters continue to be well fleshed out, even the secondary and further characters like Glenn, Edden and Marshall makes for excellent reading. And the fact that Rachel always second-guesses things because she wants to make sure she is morally sound is another thing that I admire her for (and yes, I actually do know Rachel is a character in a book... but if she was real, I'd want to be her friend!) The way both Jenks and Ivy grow, too, and how even Trent is showing some slight kind of change, keeps making me come back for even more."Remember that book you gave me for the winter solstice?" I asked. "No." My eyes came up, but he wouldn't meet them. His jaw was clenched, making his long face appear longer. "The one I used to bring-" I started. "No." It was forceful, and my lips parted when I realized he meant no as in "I'm not telling," not "I don't know.""Ceri sent them," I said when I saw her absolutely tiny handwriting. "Trent probably doesn't even know she put his name on the card." Jenks landed on my knee. "I bet he does," he said with a guffaw [...]The girl with the red pajamas smiled like Ceri, wise and fragile. "You're not bad inside," she said, petting my wrist. "Just hurt."If you haven't started The Hollows series yet, please do yourself a favor and just get it! I am so happy to be obsessed by Rachel, Ivy, Jenks and the rest, and I would love to have even more people to chat about them with;)

I kept hearing great things about Kristen Ashley's books so I decided to finally read one. I picked The Gamble and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was a lot different than what I expected but in a good way. First of all, I love reading nice, long novels that really allow readers to get comfortable and immerse themselves in the characters' lives. It took me a little while to get into it and figure out what was going on with everyone but once that happened, I couldn't stop reading! This book was also a combination of romance, humor, drama (LOTS of drama), suspense, just to name a few. There were a few parts to the book that I was not expecting at all and I'll admit my heart was pounding because I was getting a bit nervous at what was going to happen next, but in the end, everything worked out for the best. I loved Nina's fiery attitude and how Max forced her to face her fears and open up to him. Overall, I really liked this book and I am looking forward to reading more of Kristen Ashley's books! I would recommend them to anyone!

** spoiler alert ** This book was my first KA book. It did not wow me, it did not move me in any particular way.The writing was not what I expected. It seemed very scattered; and maybe that's because the main character, Nina, is supposed to be a scatterbrained woman. I just got very annoyed with all the run-on sentences and random slang. The plot was a bit scattered too. I realize my opinion on this is the minority, but I felt that the book could have ended in 300 pages, not 600. It didn't need all the extra.I also did not like the diminishing of the abusive man, Damon, in this story. This person is an abusive guy, that beats up Nina multiple times, and yet she's easily recovered because Max comes and saves the day. It's not real, and I realize this is a fiction story, but it diminishes the mental strain an abused person goes through after the abuse. The reality is that she wouldn't just call the abuser "my macho mountain man stalker" like it's a light-hearted thing. She wouldn't be okay to just cover it up with make-up, or in another scene, let her man feel her up right after. I was so annoyed by this that I almost stopped reading the book.Another thing KA diminishes is Rape. There is a character that has gone through the trauma of being violated and raped two weeks prior to Nina coming to Gnaw Bone. Yet this girl is skip dancing around the house? Come on. Let's not pretend that she was just fine immediately after. There were some serious actions taken by this character that did reflect that she wasn't fine, but I felt the writing was very insensitive for the two topics mentioned above.I also HATE how weak of a woman Nina is. She isn't strong, she isn't smart, she is annoying and flighty. She can't come up with a solid sentence to save her life. All the "Um....I'm sorry....Huh?" sentences grated on my nerves. All in all, I will read another KA book to see if this is a pattern or if this book was just a one-off miss. As this was my first KA book, I'll give it another chance.I also realize my review and poor rating is an outlier among all the positive reviews. I will accept that as I do not take lightly to serious issues that affect women being trivialized in this way.

I have read 3 KA books, each from a different series. This one was my last for oh, so many reasons. This review may contain minor *SPOILERS*.After slogging through Nina and Max's story, I've decided that KA is a one-note writer. All her stories are repetetive, with too much going on and a lot of inexplicable drama to take away from the MC's. All her H/h are the same persons, just repackaged, renamed and relocated. All her men are controlling, possessive Neanderthals with poor language skills, but they're HOT so that makes their "Me Man, you woman" mentality okay. They are utter jerks, but since they're hurting it's okay. When they're upset they have the power to brainwash their women. Even when clearly RIGHT the heroine suddenly is convinced she's wrong and also the worst. person. ever."OMG! what was I thinking? I suck! He's so perf and I don't deserve him!"I refer to the 'big conflict' in The Gamble. No KA hero can speak in full sentences, but in this instance Max magically regains the ability and blisters Nina with a self-indulgent guilt-trip because she knew about his dead wife and didn't tell him. Worse, she couldn't read his tiny mind! She didn't automatically KNOW that he was struggling with how to tell her. Oh, the humanity!Right. Sorry dude, it was YOUR responsibility to tell her about your wife, BEFORE you basically strong-armed her into uprooting her entire life because after just a week you fancy her as 'yours.'Max knew Nina's whole history but withheld his own and then had the stones to tear her to shreds and walk out on her. Hell no.And did Nina make him work back into her good graces? Oh no, because a KA hero never shows remorse or lowers himself to an apology and Cro-Magnon mountain man Wonder Max is no exception. Although to be fair, ol Maxi pad did admit he made a mistake once or twice. He didn't learn from them but hey, it's sort of an apology, right? But Nina, like all KA heroines, is TSTL. These women are supposed to be strong and so amazingly special that they are the ONLY ones able to reach the poor, damaged hero. In actuality, they are spineless, weak doormats who allow their will to be subverted, forget who they are and constantly make excuses for the abhorrent behaviours of their men. Being a KA heroine also means that the ability to express herself drains away (probably from all the sex the hero uses to keep the lil' woman in line). She is left unable to get more tgan a word in through all that manly grunting - "But...", "well...", "um...", "sorry?" and of course my favourite, the hero's name on ineffectual repeat. Goals for life, I tell ya.I have yet to meet a woman who finds being micromanaged attractive. No intelligent, self-respecting, capable woman wants to be so posessed and protected she can't even use the toilet alone. Forcing your will on another, ignoring their protests and controlling every aspect of their lives is not love. It's sick, and I'm convinced that this writer has a very twisted view of love, relationships and what women find desireable in a man. Thanks, but no thanks. 1 star, because I have to.

i love this little book as a very concise review of the basics. i noticed many typos with the first edition, and they were not all corrected in the second edition - frustrating at best, clinically risky at worst. the tabs also peel apart after minimal usage on both editions.

Excellent size and quality of page material with exception to the tabs. The only problem... so many errors! WHY? Quite irritating to the SRNA.

It's great! Bright colors, nice pictures, easy to maneuver. Small and compact, but easy to read. Concise, but good information.

Love it! It's simple and easy to use!

Seen a colleague had one and decided I needed to have one. Handy, pocket size guide book. Contains helpful info for quick reference. Easy to carry around.

Thought this pocket guide would be great...it's small, spiral bound, and seemed to have useful information but I did not care for it. It just never seemed to have the information I was looking about particular topics. I sold this back after a short period because I got absolutely no use out of it. There is a much better pocket guide on the market

Good little book with much information. I use it several times as a reference and if I need more detail then I go to another source.

Okay book but i think there are better books out there with more technical data

True Grit: A Novel, by Charles Portis

Review

"Tom Wolfe, who worked with Portis as a reporter at the "New York Herald-Tribune" in the early 1960s called him the original laconic cutup. A generation of novelists since then have simply regarded him as a writers] writer and have made his name a sort of secret password. Soon, they'll no longer have him to themselves." --"Rolling Stone" "An epic and a legend." --"The Washington Post" "Like Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" and Thomas Berger's "Little Big Man", Charles Portis's "True Grit" captures the naive elegance of the American voice." -- Jonathan Lethem "An instant classic. Read it and have the most fun you've had reading a novel in years, maybe decades." --"Newsday" "Skillfully constructed, a comic tour de force." --"The New York Times Book Review" "Charles Portis details the savagery of the 1870s frontier through an astonishing narrative voice: that of the 14-year-old Mattie Ross, a flinty, skeptical, Bible-thumping scourge." --"Wall Street Journal" "I loved that book. Charles Portis got a real Mark Twain feeling, the cynicism and the humor. I tried to buy the book myself." --John Wayne

If you are a fan of either of the True Grit Movies, be it the John Wayne title or the more recent 2010 remake with Jeff Bridges, you'll enjoy this book. Both films stick to the book in their own way, but in my opinion the newer release sticks closer to the original plot and tone of the book; although both add and take away in places. Overall, even if you haven't seen the film I'd recommend it as it is a captivating but quick read (I finished It in one night). My only complaint is it is not longer, but sometimes the greatest pieces get to the point quicker than others.

What makes True Grit the fine novel it is ,is it's brilliant use of first person narrative by its main character.Mattie Ross is a 14 year old girl who goes through something that winds up defining her for life.It grabs you at the beginning and holds you to the end. Most readers will probably have seen one or both movie versions. That's not a problem. One impression you'll almost certainly have is this is a western. It is.But it's a western set in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma not the Rio Bravo. The novel is as much or more Southern as it is Western. All the principles have a connection to the Civil War.The older men fought for the Confederacy. The Indians in Oklahoma(Indian Territory) fought for the Confederacy.Federal Judge Parker is a carpetbagger and Republicans are a scurvy lot.Mattie's political commentary is priceless. There is an afterword by Donna Tart that is surprisingly mediocre.Tart has little of interest to say. While she claims to be an aficionado of the book ,her grasp of the historical setting is shaky. The novel is almost certainly set in 1878.It can't be before 1877 because Rutherford B. Hayes is president and it can't be after his term ended which is March 1881.I can't prove this but I think the novel is a 50 year anniversary reverie by Mattie Ross which takes place in 1928.You know it's 1928 because Mattie talks of her belief that Al Smith will be elected president.Tart says the novel takes place shortly after the Civil War which is correct if you consider 13 years , shortly after. She also says the novel is reflected through Mattie's memories in the early 1900's.Well if you consider 1928 the early 1900's , that's correct. However I have a suspicion Tart thinks Mattie's reflections take place in 1903 when she goes to see Rooster Cogburn in the Wild West Show. After mapping out the history in my head ,I checked to see what others think and I realized a lot of reviewers miss the comments on Hayes and Smith. That's too bad because if you don't grasp the political and historical context of the novel you're missing part of it and a dimension of Mattie.

After reading a string of unimpressive books, True Grit surprised me and made me remember what it was that I love about reading! From the first page, it hooks you. I found the main character, Mattie, to be so likable (in both the book and film) and strong. It’s hard to not admire a character with such strength and determination. She’s looking for the man who killed her father and has hired the U.S. Marshall with the most grit to aid her. A Texas Ranger, LaBeouf also joins up with them for the mission. There are so many times when she’s told that she can’t do something and then does it anyways. Her age and sex do not stand in the way of anything for her.I did see the Coen brother’s version of the movie before reading the book, but as I was reading along I could see that most of the dialogue from the movie was taken directly from the book. I love when a book and movie can be so similar, it makes visualizing the characters and events much easier. The dialogue is also incredibly witty, smart and funny (when it’s meant to be).I loved this book! I tore through it in a matter of days. It’s a fun story, exciting throughout the entire read, the characters are likable (even when they’re rude!) and overall, this is just an excellent read. Highly recommended!

It's not everyday that a book written nearly 40 years ago is still appealing, fresh, clever, and marvelous to read. I knew that there had to be something here (I mean, it's been made into two films) but I wasn't sure about reading a western (especially a YA western). Any fears that you may have that this book will not engage and entertain you can be safely laid to rest.My favorite genre is still thriller novels, gruesome serial killers or dark broken women (think Gone Girl) but I have to say this book was very refreshing and while a light, quick read (I spent a few hours in basically one sitting to finish) it wasn't light on content or message.Quite often in these cases I'd be writing "the book is so much better than the film" but I have to say that in this case the films (I've seen both versions) stayed fairly true to the book (the more recent version being more "gutsy").Anyway, if you're reading this far, go ahead and purchase the book and trust me that you won't be disappointed.

This is an American classic that is underappreciated despite generating two popular Hollywood movies. Charlie Portis's writing is fantastic, and his character development is top-notch. This is a gripping and exciting novel that is much better than either of the namesake movies. This tells the story of a brave young woman seeking her father's murderer. Along the way she is joined by two complex characters, one a drunken US Marshall and the other a self-obsessed Texas Ranger. All three join forces (sometimes) to seek the murder and the rest of the murderer's gang. The adventure travels through the rugged wilds of late 1800s Arkansas and Oklahoma. This is the quintessential great American novel.
