Book received was used, but like new, with very minimal sign of wear. I purchased this book for a journalism class which reference the book quite often. It is a great resource to introduce you to the fundamentals of graphic design, and is done in such a way that will age well as technology advances. The principles outlined are not specific to a certain time, and will be just as helpful a few years down the road as it is today.My only disappointment was, shortly after ordering I found the book available for free as a pdf online. Had I know that I probably wouldn't have purchased the book, but I decided to keep it as I like having a hard copy for study materials.

There are some interesting practical tips, but this book is not for beginners. It glosses over the principles of good design, and it contains a trite list of what not to do. I found the advice rather vague--a lot of "don't do this" without many tips or examples of what TO DO to fix common issues. "Use your judgement" is not helpful advice. Also, in case you're not sure what book you're reading, the text will frequently remind you: white space is not your enemy (in italics).For beginners, I recommend reading The Non-Designer's Design Book for a firm foundation on the core principles of alignment, proximity, repetition, and contrast. WSINYE might be useful for intermediate designers and web developers or freelancers who are looking for professional production tips.

Overall, the text of this book is good, but the design and examples contradict it. Just look at the cover--there's hardly any white space! The example designs are very busy and don't lead the eye well. They make it hard to learn what they're teaching. Even the text, which in general is good, has grammar mistakes that distract from their message. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who is trying to develop a design sense since it is a little misleading. It's too bad, this could've been a good book.

I bought this book to break down a beginning graphic design course that I will be teaching. The outline of the book is smart, the right order and good beginning materials to cover. Someone somewhere commented that the old cover of the earlier edition made more sense. This cover has no real white space! It's nothing really. The inside layout is better and much improved and more "user friendly"= readability - from the older edition. Great book, I'll be keeping my eye on the authors for future works.

I had to get this book for a Graphic Design course I was taking. First thing I'll say about this book? What a great price! Good change from all those hundred dollar textbooks I always dread to buy. Some say that price is an indication of the level of information provided. True, but it isn't always a terrible thing. This book is geared towards those who are beginners, and I should know I was a complete beginner in this topic!The chapters are organized so they build upon the knowledge you gain from the previous one, however if one were to skip ahead you won't be lost. I'm sure you can start from the end, but that takes the fun away from starting at chapter one. This book teaches you the do's and don't's when creating designs. Starting with the mistakes every beginner will most likely make, duh. While you won't be creating some professional looking brochures or posters, you will have knowledge of what makes a design pleasing to an audience. There are several devices it presents that are useful and can be built upon should you proceed in that direction. I like to look back at the book too, I usually just skim the pages. The images themselves are nice to look at and can get those creative juices flowing.And always remember that white space isn't your enemy.

So, I've taken 2 classes using this textbook and run into the same problem with both classes and the textbook. (Note: the two teachers had very different approaches to using the text and so I waited to write the review to see if it changed my opinion). Regardless of how heavily the teacher relied on the text for the foundation of their lectures or how much work we did that mirrored the problems for the homework, ultimately when the homework problems came the examples in the text of each chapter weren't close to complicated enough for the problems in the homework at the end of the chapter. It was difficult because these teachers didn't utilize the online resource available. So, if there is a class you're about to take that uses this book, do everything you can to get the teacher to use online (the interactive site where they have problems you can work through) from the publisher....it will be the difference in success and frustration. Otherwise, get online and find somewhere to rent/purchase the solutions manual for the most recent edition---the problems aren't that different and it provides a base to work from when your teacher may not be accessible.

I used this book for an investments class in my final semester of college. The reading was a little dry but nothing too out of the ordinary for a finance class. The information was relatively straightforward and presented concisely. The powerpoints provided in class were easier to understand and I often used them as supplemental material.The price was also a huge selling point on this product. New in the bookstore, it would have been nearly $100 more, so I was eager to buy it online. I found Amazon to be the best price and am happy with the purchase.

The books says "this can be done on excel" WELL SHOW ME HOW TO DO IT. Sometimes I search for hours on the internet how to do the stuff that they say that can be done on excel, and don't find it or too confusing. There were like three times that they showed how to do something on excel or gave the formula. I wish my prof had picked another book. To be honest, I do not know many other finance books but this one is not good.

Helped me greatly with extra practice and to understand concepts in Investments class. The professor was new, and had too many students to be able to give much homework. So that is why I purchased this text.This book helped me in the class (although I also visited the professor during office hours, studied with classmates, went to extra student instruction times with a TA---many students were struggling in the class, especially at first, because the prof. was new).Got an A in the class and graduated with a BBA at the end of that semester and a cumulative 4.0 GPA. So a serious student can appreciate this workbook. Uff-dah! Hurray for being done.

Well organized and easy to understand. Some of the explanations of the more complex topics felt like they got a bit repetitive without adding any additional clarity.

Tough read. The book dances around concepts in fine print. I would prefer the authors hotnyou with a theory or concept and then reiterate it in detail with examples. Chances are you don't have a choice anyway if this text is required. Just give yourself extra time since finding the essentials in a sea of words is like hooking a tuna on the open oceans. Cheers

It all began with the movie "Hocus Pocus" My first trip there was in 1996 with my daughter Kandace. When I arrived in Salem, it felt like home, like I had been there and lived there all of my life...+ I remember the first morning there, we stayed at the Stepping Stone Inn, the year 1996, the month of May, I got up early, walked down English Street onto Derby Street and I saw the lighthouse on Derby Street, I walked down to then end of the Wharf, the sun shinning, the waves of the Atlantic Ocean glistened in the sunlight, like diamonds in the rough. It was so beautiful, I couldn't believe I was standing there...+ The City is so Magical, it is full of history, like the witchcraft trials of 1692, the maritime trade, the author era, the clothing Mills,Parker Brothers, Laurie Cabot (OWOS), the Peabody Essex Museum (a must see), the Salem Witch Museum, Witch shoppes of all kinds, physic readings almost everywhere and Haunted Happenings, an event that you must see once in your lifetime. I have been to Salem several times since then and I plan to go again soon. As a writer, this town has strengthened my creativity, it has been my inspirations. Every time I take a trip to Salem, I stay at the Stepping Stone in, the proprietor, makes you feel very welcome and at home, and it is a hop, skip and a stones throw away from all the wonderful sites that you will experience...+ With that being said, this book is one of the best and most well researched books that I have ever read and had the pleasure to read... I agree with the reviews--it was hard to put down, and here again this book has been a creative inspiration to me--the stories, the history, the facts, it was like the long awaited final piece of the puzzle... I enjoyed the book in many ways, because it answered so many questions for me about Salem, things I already knew, but Mr. Baltrusis expanded on making the experience of getting to know the town of Salem, Massachusetts on a very personal and up close level. I am a fiction/mystery/history writer and this book filled the bill on all of these. I hope Mr. Baltrusis will take this book and expand even more, like colored photos of all of the areas he has written about and hopefully Mr. Baltrusis, will take each one of these--let's say the "Cemetery Haunts, one by one and write even more on the places he has experienced. It is like the old saying,"seeing something through someone else's eyes and for me with Mr. Baltrusis, his writing, his history, his facts--through his words, it was like I was experiencing Salem as if I was actually there. I don't do review books much, but I do read a lot--however, this book had it all, mystery, history and the facts--this book was spooky and left me sitting on the edge of my seat and it gave me ideas upon ideas for my new novel. Thank you Mr. Baltrusis. I sure hope that you will write more on the City of Salem, it was a pure delight to read your book...Salem Writer...+

It has a very historical content to it. The pictures were very representative of the stories. The purpose of the book is to make the reader recognize the death of the 19 girls that occurred in 1692. Also as a purpose to not recognize Salem as the most haunted place in the United States, but to remember what happened there instead.
