About the Author

Laura E. Berk is a distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught child, adolescent, and lifespan development for more than three decades. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in child development and educational psychology from the University of Chicago. She has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of South Australia. Her empirical studies have attracted the attention of the general public, leading to contributions to Psychology Today and Scientific American. She has also been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and in Parents Magazine, Wondertime, and Reader’s Digest. Berk has served as a research editor of Young Children, a consulting editor for Early Childhood Research Quarterly, and an associate editor of the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. She is a frequent contributor to edited volumes, having written the article on social development for The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion and the article on Vygotsky for The Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science. She is coauthor of the chapter on make-believe play and self-regulation in the Sage Handbook of Play in Early Childhood and the chapter on psychologists writing textbooks in Career Paths in Psychology: Where Your Degree Can Take You, published by the American Psychological Association. Good book. It’s detailed like any human growth book. Although—I don’t like how subjects, definitions, etc are highlighted—I’d rather do that myself. Having to find a binder for it just goes to show the publishers are cheaper than dirt and want to take every advantage imaginable to make sure you won’t resell the book. On th surface it may seem as if a convenience, you can take which pages you need. But the underlying reason is clearly monetary. Education shouldn’t be expensive. I can get the exact same education at a library for free. I only purchased this book specifically for class. The minute they started making education a business was the minute they dismantled the system. Another thing is that the book is way too cheap. With a binder, the pages easily rip out of the book, rendering it nearly useless. $100 for this? No, thanks. Never mind I’m writing this, this is coming from someone who takes very good care of their belongings. Now I have to buy hole punch savers. Thanks for nothing.

Well written, very up to date, comprehensive, easy to understand and informative. Couldn't have asked for a better guide through my Developmental Psychology class! I got an A in the class and a better understanding of humans development. I took it as part of my pre-nursing requirement and I can say it will definitely help later on down the road in my future career.

After becoming interested in the tuning process for my 2006 Subaru WRX I ran into this book and after looking at the reviews decided it would be a good start.After reading it all the way through I can say that it was a perfect fit for where I was at knowledge wise. I'd say this is a good fit for someone that already works on cars and has a solid understanding of the basics of how a gasoline engine works and what the basics components in the engine bay are.When you want to go past the basics and learn what's really making the efi system work this will explain in detail each part of tuning an engine. It covers engine ecu inputs and outputs, sensors, how they work, and the part each plays in the tuning process as well as the steps you take when the car is on the Dyno to start developing an accurate model of engine airflow and fuel flow to make everything run right.I'll say that I did get lost during a few more technical parts of the book but I probably understood about 80-90% of what was touched on and I think that is a real success. With some work memorizing some important terms and perhaps another read through or two of the more complex parts I'll have a solid understanding of the basics.For someone looking at this book with a background in Subarus I can say that the book offers several pictures of and references to the WRX STI and for the year the book was released all the info is relevant for your GD and GR model year Subaru's using the USDA EJ20 and 25 engines. I really would have liked to see a specific example of the approach to tuning a Subaru or really anly import in general but unfortunately the only examples in the book are for Ford and GM vehicles. Less time spent on carborator and distributor discusion and function would he appreciated in an updated version as well sense they are not involved in an EFI system and don't help to teach EFI concepts except for maybe a very brief overview of their purpose compared to current day technologies. Non the less, the info contained was very useful to me and with more reading and some hands on practice I think this books will get a beginner well on their way to understanding efi and getting started with some basic tuning.

EFI live and the Tuning School has actual how n why tuning instruction that I consider actual advanced tuning. I felt the author was just trying to impress you with his knowledge than giving any instruction.

I am looking into installing a stand-alone engine management (megasquirt) in my vehicle and decided I needed a more "put together" source of information regarding how an engine operates and how to best tune for all running conditions.I really liked how this book is organized and illustrated. Broken up into logical chapters that are easily understood.After reading the book cover-to-cover I can say that I have learned all I need to get started with my adventures in engine tuning.While this book is not going to give you any hand outs, it will teach you the basics and their effects on an engine.

Lots of useful information for making an EFI fueled engine. Unfortunately assumes the builder has access to a chassis dyno for calibration. In my area the minimum charge for a chassis dyno session is as much as my engine and transmission together. Really needs to outline a less expensive calibration regimen instead of the chassis dyno.

This is one of the best automotive performance books I've read. Very thorough. He goes deep into the physics and science of engine operation and controls, and explains it so you don't need a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering to understand it. That's different than many similar books which are light on explaining the basics, and too heavy on sample aftermarket packages.

This is the best book (so far!) that I've read on the explanations of how the modern engines are controlled by their on-board "computer," the ECU. Explains what "Maps" are and how they affect EVERYTHING in your car engine!

Great read, but sometimes it is hard to follow. Not from a technical perspective, but the authors writing style is all over the place at time.

This book does a great job of describing how engine computers do their job, giving you a good basis to start learning to tune. Some books/courses are just a list of steps to take, and when you're done you really don't have a good idea what you did, but it hopefully works well enough. This book is a nice addition to fill in the "why" and "how" questions so you can understand much better what you're doing, why you're doing it, and how it works.

My proposal first explained that product development gets easier, faster, and cheaper every year, so startups no longer fail because they can't build their product. Instead, startups fail when they hit the marketing wall.According to The Economist (2014 Sep 13), "marketers say they have seen more change in the past two years than in the previous 50."According to the Harvard Business Review (2014 July-August, p. 56) "In the past decade, what marketers do to engage customers has changed almost beyond recognition....we can't think of another discipline that has evolved so quickly."It can seem like marketing is getting harder each year, but actually in some ways it's getting easier and cheaper, e.g., Facebook's targeted ads. What's needed is a guide to how marketing is changing.Unlike the zillions of e-books about Facebook marketing, Twitter marketing, etc., my book would cover and compare all marketing channels. Unlike the e-books, my book would include case studies of real companies. Unlike the marketing textbooks, my book would focus on tech startups, not on dog treat bakeries and corner grocery stores. Unlike the books that say you'll get rich if you follow their formula, my book would say that marketing is changing rapidly now, and the marketing plan that worked even a few years ago won't work now. It's more satisfying to add a new feature to your product than to spend your limited capital on a marketing test that completely fails. We feel comfortable developing our products but feel clueless marketing them.- Integration with Lean Startup. That was the book I proposed a few years ago, and Eric Reis beat me to it!- How much traction (downloads, press coverage, sales) investors want to see before they invest increases every year, as marketing gets faster and cheaper to some startups.- Every entrepreneur has to hand sell the first few customers.- Building a viral marketing campaign will take one or two engineers three to six months! I.e., viral marketing doesn't magically happen just because your product is so cool.Stuff that's missing:- Celebrity endorsements is a 20th channel.- A chapter about market research, e.g., why you should ask open-ended questions instead of closed-ended questions.- The PR chapter needs a section on finding journalist contacts, se.g., whether to use the Meltwater or Cision databases.- Tradeshows are about having outgoing, enthusiastic salespeople, not about having a flashy booth.

I've been head of marketing and strategy for startups and interesting brands for several years, and this was the first book I've ever read that is actually useful and something I frequently reference in channel, strategy and overall marketing brainstorming sessions. Why? Because it provides a comprehensive view of contemporary best-practices in marketing, without all the old baggage and fluff to which many marketers still cling. Today's marketing means you're actually responsible for revenue. If you're still doing the kind of marketing that focuses on activity and top-of-funnel vanity metrics (like how many unsuspecting tradeshow attendee badges you zapped thanks to your TV giveaway, or passing a huge seemingly impressive number of crappy MQLs to sales so you can hit your quotas), then please don't waste your time reading this. You won't get it, or you work somewhere where you can't actually apply this learning due to all the internal risk-adverse forces working against you. For everyone else who believes in the new of ways of marketing (basically, marketing without all the BS), this book and others in the series should be in your e-reader or physically sitting next to your laptop right now.

Traction was extremely helpful for me as a budding entrepreneur and author. In the book, Weinberg and Mares lay out 19 different "traction channels" everyone looking for their next client should consider. Furthermore, they challenge you to give a hard look to some of the channels you would normally dismiss without a second thought. Why? Sometimes the channel you least thought would work turns out to be highly effective.Something I appreciated about this book was how much objective research went into it. The list of traction channels wasn't something they pulled out of their backside, but rather something that resulted from extensive interviews with entrepreneurs and business people who have experienced real-life success with them.The only reason I didn't give Traction five stars is because many of the sections lacked the practical advice needed to put these strategies into action. To that extent, I felt like it left me hanging in quite a few areas. Not every reader is going to know who to contact for a PR campaign, how to get started with SEO, or the best way to setup a sales process/team. If you are looking for very specific information like this, realize that this book won't deliver it to you.Now to be fair - each of the 19 channels probably deserves its own book to describe such detail, and I don't think this book was intended to be an encyclopedic guide to implementing every channel. This book was surely intended to be more of a top-level overview. To that end, it was great for calibrating one's understanding (from a leadership/executive perspective) of each channel. It inspired me to think outside the box with my own business and projects, and I still found a lot of value in it.Anyone new to the startup world or who plans to start their own business deserves to read this book - and probably also the Lean Startup by Eric Ries. Some have said Traction and the Lean Startup go hand-in-hand, with Traction focusing more on customer acquisition and Lean Startup focusing more on product development. The build-measure-learn concept is present in each, however, and is a clear theme for all new business owners.Once again, would certainly recommend to anyone new to the startup world or entrepreneurship. It's a quick and easy read with many good ideas.

Simple, but worthwhile book. I've re-read it a few times. It's basic point is that there are (at least) 19 channels to gain traction (customers) for a product or service, and we tend to only look at a few we might be familiar with. The second point is that after traction in one channel is achived, for additional traction, a different channel or tactic is likely needed for the next phase. Detailed discussion of the different channels and examples of their use in various organizations. Definitely worthwhile for those who are doing product marketing, at any stage of an organization's growth.

This book is, itself, an excellent re-ordering of St. Louis Dr Monfort's treatise in that instead of flipping back and forth through the book for the various items you need for each day's devotion, everything you need for a particular day is found, in order, under that day's heading. This transforms a complicated process into a very convenient and easy to follow devotion. I highly recommend this book on that basis alone.There is a large caveat, however, to wit: whomever prepared the Kindle edition must surely have failed to submit it to a proofreader, as there typos, omissions, and misspellings on every page. This naturally disrupts the flow of reading, which is bad enough for one in prayer, but it also introduces actual error into what the Saint is writing. A revised, carefully corrected edition must be prepared and issued quickly!

St. Pope John Paul II credited this book and St Louis de Monfort as a turning point in his life. Nine past popes highly recommended this book and devotion. All I can say is that this book and devotion has also changed my life for the better. Thank you St Louis de Monfort, please pray for us.
