As someone who was on my 5th trip to Puerto Vallarta, I bought the book for some new ideas on restaurants I hadn't tried, and on new activities. The book does a good job for that purpose, and for its $10 price on amazon, I can't complain. However, its coverage of other subjects is fairly poor; I would almost say downright silly. For example, it spends 75 pages going through oodles of general information with limited to no relevance to Puerto Vallarta, such as how many Starbucks in the U.S. have T-mobile hotspots, the relative benefits of Yahoo versus Hotmail accounts, and the location of the South African embassy in Mexico City. For example, it goes through pages of customs formalities on taking your car into Mexico--yet I feel it's unlikely that someone who's going only to PV is going to drive there.What makes this all the more silly is that the book devotes only 7 pages to hotels in PV. It describes two in the Marina Vallarta area, two in the northern Hotel Zone (one of which it doesn't particularly recommend, giving it one star), three downtown, and 3 in the southern Hotel Zone. Of the three hotels discussed in the downtown area, one has been long torn down (the Molino de Agua), one is kind of yucky (the Playa Los Arcos--I've stayed there), and the third is a rather quirky choice--the Hacienda San Angel. This last hotel is a long hike to any beach, and its rooms range in price from $310-$590 depending on the room and season (except one room which goes for as little as $235 in low season). I'm sure it's a fine hotel for a small niche of customers, but it's not what I would include if I had only very limited space for hotel choices in my book.The book also has some space devoted to other cities, and another one of the other hotel recommendations which I found bizarre was the "Hotelito Desconocido" (unknown little hotel). Again, there must be a market for places like this, but I suspect that the market's pretty small for a hotel with no electricity (lit by candles), almost no activities, a beach with water unsafe to swim in (no swimming allowed), and mosquitos galore with rooms going for $300-$600 a night, not including a required meal plan.I don't mean to imply this book is useless. I did learn about new places to go with it, and the price is right. However, I have issue with the choices of material the books covered: to much of certain things, and too little of others.

This 2008 portable edition out in 2007 gives an overview for the mainstream, first time tourist to the area. The back cover reads,Experience a place the way the locals do...." but in reality it'shardly more than an introduction for the non-trekker types. Maybe someone who wants to play golf, buy drinks and wade in the Ocean will gets something from this little volume; otherwise it's a superficial overview of the area.I bought the book primarily to "discover" more about Manzanillo and was disappointed that it gave so little information.

This guide book provided plenty of reviews and recommendations to help make our Puerto Vallarta vacation a memorable one. Frommer rarely disappoints!

I got some good tips from the book. It helped me get familar with the layout of the area. In short, the top things I learned from the book were:1) At the Puerto Vallarta airport keep your head down and don't talk to anyone. They're all trying to sell you something.2) Use the pedestrian walk to cross over the highway and get a cheaper cab than from the airport. (We bargained and got a $13 USD ride to Nuevo Vallarta)3) Vallarta Adventures is a reputable tour group in the area. We booked all our tours through them in advance on their website. [...]

I enjoyed this guide book. It's not super comprehensive, but then it's not meant to be. The small size enabled me to slip into my pocket and carry it with me. It had enough information to guide me around Puerto Vallarta, and we tried several of the restaurants that it recommended with good results - the La Palapa restaurant was superb! I loved that place - slightly expensive, but worth it. A very romantic beach front restaurant.Buy this guide-book and the Moon guide-book and you'll have enough information to explore the Puerto Vallarta area.

Book is entertaining & an easy read, it's ~ 238pgs, the last 50 or so pgs are "end notes." The author lays out enough info w/o the story being bogged down w/ too much unnecessary detail about whaling & surviving disasters on the sea. When the Essex gets rammed by the perturbed sperm whale, that's when the story gets the most interesting & disheartening. Hollywood has decided to turn this into a movie, Ron Howard (Happy Days) will direct it. Cant wait to see who they cast for the young seamen, it's amazing that ~ 1/2 of the 20 men are under age 25; the youngest is 14 & one of the survivors. If you like sea adventures, then you'll enjoy this story, read it in 2 days!

I'm not here to necessarily review the book - as several people have already expressed what a great story this is - but rather I'm here to say thank you to Nathaniel Philbrick and all other non-fiction writers who have taken the time to research amazing real life events and place that information into a gripping, factual account that somehow still reads like a novel. I'm a high school history teacher who loves all kinds of history, but was never really interested in the whaling culture found on Nantucket Island, per se. But after having read an article about the book in my Smithsonian Magazine, I was instantly gripped. I had no idea that Moby Dick was based on a real event. When I was in high school, my dad challenged me to read Moby Dick. I think he actually said he would give me $100 to finish it - and even with the cash reward - I couldn't do it. I was so bored. But, at 17 years old, I had not yet found my favorite genre: historical non-fiction. Now as an adult, and obviously because I teach the subject, I have become a voracious reader of non-fiction books, and having just consumed this one, I can tell you it was well-written and paced beautifully. In between the story of the Essex were lots of little tidbit type facts about the whaling industry in general as well as other very famous and not-so-famous stove ships and evidences of survival induced cannibalism. Very interesting book. I'll be looking for another Philbrick book to read right after I post this review.

Almost from the very beginning, the author spins together letters, partially-written accounts and log book entries-- along with his own research-- into a tale that is difficult to put down. Descriptions of shipwrecked sailors' dehydration and starvation are not for the faint of heart; furthermore, it was difficult not to squirm when attention turned to the grisly matter of 'harvesting' human flesh and doling it out amongst survivors. But a single detail refrains: in almost all accounts listed, sailors and shipmen appeared surprised and indignant when their quarry began to fight back. More than a few were bitter about these retaliations, ruminating upon them as they drifted helplessly in stranded whale-boats. But given the violent and extremely bloody methods used to dispatch a whale during that time period (first harpooning them, then rowing alongside to slash at tender tendons near the tail if they failed to succumb right away), the reason should be obvious: whales are extremely intelligent mammals with complex relationships and the same right to protect their pods and youngsters as any other creature. This tale is filled with horrific suffering, endured by both whales and shipmen alike.

I knew the outlines of the story of the Essex from reading Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America. What was most interesting to me was the story of how the crew dealt with the event, their tenacity, ability to endure enormous suffering, and willingness to follow leaders, even leaders with very different skill sets. Lots of revealing detail about the community of Nantucket, the construction of the ships, how the crews were assembled of novice and veteran whalers, the sheer enormity of the task of finding, killing, rendering whales and sailing these relatively small, relatively fragile ships thousands of miles into unknown waters. These were courageous, if not desperate, men.

Most readers now probably know that the destruction of the whaling ship Essex by a very large whale was a source for Herman Melville's great novel "Moby Dick". Without invidious comparison, it might be said that Mr. Philbrick picks up where Melville left off. He offers a fascinating and very real account -- and aftermath-- of the dramatic and dumbfounding event that actually happens at the end of Moby Dick as a masterwork of American literature. Philbrick draws from the accounts of Essex survivors and the realities of the whaling industry and its wooden ship world. It's a tough world, and Philbrick brings its details and people alive, which they once were, in a straightforward work of reportage as to what happened not only to a ship but to its people suddenly stranded in the middle of an ocean.If you've read Melville-- either recently or some time ago, as I-- you owe it to yourself to know something more of his source and to find out "how it all ends". If you read Philbrick first you may learn all you want and forego jumping into Melville's turbulent sea, with itsundercurrents of Biblical doubt, human and animal vengeance and much else. But you're more likely to sign onto Melville's fateful voyage better prepared for what might be in store for you along with Ishmael and Quee Queg in Cap'n Ahab's crew. I love Dennis Prayer and the book was good but I was a little disappointed. I expected it to be a kids book but it was more like sections taken out of an adult book and reworded a little. I have read it to my kids but I have to add and reword things to make it more interesting and understandable. If I could go back I wouldn't have bought it and I would just show them the PragerU videos instead. They are much more interesting and more complete.

I really like how this book can facilitate great conversation with kids. It can be the backbone to more daily conversations with naturally arising teaching/learning/growing moments.The common sense points/facts/opinions are all beneficially in this book; Some topics in the book may be incomplete/not exactly clear, depending on their age level--most attentive parents often know the best word choices that help their children best understand what is being said.Still this book definitely did an excellent job in saying it well and stating vital points, thus putting conversations on the best path to teach our children well!So many silly kids books (there is a time for them) and brain-numbing books (don't waste your child's intelligence) should be replaced with books like this.

As a church school pastor I am thoroughly impressed with the mode of presentation and the fidelity to the Lord's Word traced back to the original Hebrew. I have not sent the children's book out yet but having read it myself, find it, too, excellent.Dennis is of Jewish faith and my husband is a Presbyterian pastor and ,I too, am also, Christian.He writes from original source and interpretation.We also follow Dennis"s 5 Minute Prager University courses. His series on the Torah, is excellent, probably available only from his organization.

Marc Geerdink-Schaftenaar was born in 1972 and began studying military history and uniforms after casting his first tin soldiers when he was 12. Since then, he has been fascinated with history, especially when he discovered re-enactment and living history.
